Question about Lenovo ThinkPad R51

IBM Thinkpad R51-Recovery Disc

I try to install the ThinkVantage Recovery Disc (Disc 1-7) which I downloaded into CD to reformat my laptop but it only completes to Disc #4. When Disc #5 inserted it does not run and says This is not the correct disc. Please remove the disc and press OK. Please give me some tips.
Thanks.

Yes, I am completely relying on the recovery discs.

  • mztonline Dec 26, 2008

    I Googled IBM R51 and went tohttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.w...
and created my own recovery media with rescue and recovery. I followed the instruction got the whole ThinkVantage rescue and recovery downloaded.

ok, so what was your situation? did you have to call lenovo and get them? were able to just download them from the site? did they charge you. please give me a little info so i can try to help you

  • Brian Ebeling Dec 26, 2008

i too tried the rescue and recovery route with my r-51 and it failed as well.

let me do some research as far as it stopping at disk #5 tonight and see what i can come up with.

oh and sorry, but i have to ask this. Are you sure that the disks are in the right order? maybe try to insert the other 2 when it says that it's the wrong disk. just a shot in the dark

Also you may want to start shopping around for a copy of XP to install

i'll be honest with you between my own experience and the Large amount of people in forums saying their lenovo recovery disks didn't work :(

    I'll do my best

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD. Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD. thanks and have a nice day J-

Hi, I have an IBM R51 Type 2887 Thinkpad that came with Windows XP Home edition. I formatted the laptop and put the Windows XP Professional in it. However, it could not install few key drivers (Eg. CD ROM,...

You need to access a computer that is connected to the Internet, (try going to a friend or work mate or nternet cafe etc.)

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP audio driver for your model laptop,
www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-39956.html

Copy the downloaded files and install them on your computer.

Restore disc for ibm thinkpad

I restored my computer system a few weeks ago. It took a few hours or the recovery and a few days to get everything back on, including updates and programs. Make sure it's plugged in since the it will reboot a few times.

Back up all your data because, it will all be wiped and restored to the original factory image.
Make sure you have copies of all your programs. If your MS Office was installed at the factory, it should be on there.

Step 1 - When you boot up, at the first screen press the system option to invoke recovery (means press one of the F2, F3 or F10 per screen, located at the top - whichever says system recovery). Your laptop did not come with a CD because it has a system partition that has the orginal system build.

Once you invoke recovery, it will rebuild your system, including formatting and resetting up your OS.

Step 2 - Load program and updates. Go to windowsupdate site and run the windows updates, go to the Office site and run those. Find the scanners that will recognize your software.

Download ThinkVantage System Update (Lenovo). It will automatically recognize your laptop and update all the system utilities. ThinkPad is owned by Lenove, not IBM now.

This all works great but very time consuming.
