You can set the Timer in Record Mode (camera symbol), here's how:

    1) Turn the camera on.

    2) Turn the Mode Dial to the Camera symbol.

    3) Press the Enter Button. (The small square in the middle of the Multi-Select Button.) This puts you in Quick Menu, which is handy for commonly used features.

    4) Use the Multi-Select Button's right or left arrows to rotate the icons so that the Timer symbol, a circle with a diagonal slash, appears in the exact center of the display.

    5) With the timer symbol centered on the display, press either an Up or a Down Arrow to activate the timer. The Timer is activated when you make the diagonal slash disappear.

    6) Press the Enter Button again. The normal display for photo taking returns to the display.

    7) Press the Shutter Button. A countdown will begin on the LCD display. A small yellow timer icon will appear on the display to inform you the timer function has been activated.

To turn off the Timer, repeat steps 1-5, choosing either and Up or a Down Arrow to deactivate the timer.

(Please Refer to DXG-308 User's Manual Chapter 4-1, p. 11 for a Quick Menu navigational diagram.)

To activate the timer, press the menu button (round center button in middle of arrows) then press the right arrow once until you see a cirlce with a line through it. Then press the down or up arrow and it will turn it on. You know this when the line disappears. Then press the menu button again and you are set. You will see the timer clock on the display screen. To turn it off just repeat the steps.

You can bypass the need for a USB cable with a card reader. That also saves wear on your camera.

Search Amazon.com for "card reader" and choose one compatible with your memory card

I can't upload pictures to my computer from a dxg-308.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa ( http://pciasa.google.com ).
