Unknown icon on a Canon G9

On the right side of the display on my camera I have a single hand with two curved lines either side. I've looked through the manual but I cannot find the icon anywhere? Does anyone know what this icon means and how, or if, it can be removed from the screen.

This shows up to tell you image stabilization is on. usually it happens when the shutter speed is on the slow side because of low light or when you zoom. if the hand is red, it may mean that you have a very slow shutter speed and will likely get a blurry image unless you are photographing a still subject and using a tripod.

This is the anti-shake image stabilization (IS) icon. It just means that the camera will assist you in taking crisper shots even if your hands are not super steady.
To turn it off, press the "Menu" button and then scroll down the first tab until you get to "IS". Then, use the directional control buttons to choose whether it is always on, sometimes, or off.

My camera just flickers for one second, then nothing else happens. No display or anything. battery is charged.

The Canon G9 has a design defect, two screws fall out inside the camera and short out the fuse. If you've never had it fixed for no power before this is most likely what has happened to your camera.

Do a Google search for "canon g9 no power repair" and you will see a full repair service including return shipping of your camera for just $85.

Hope this helps!

Sounds like a cracked screen. My Rebel t1i looked the same way when i dropped it a month ago. Not sure of cost to repair i never looked into it but probably not cheap.

My two year old Canon G9 was working fine. I took the battery out to recharge it and now it won't power on - as if the battery is completely dead.

A great place to get help with these G9 no power problems is: www.camerasandparts.com
They just specialize in the service for the Canon Powershot models and they are very familiar with this specific problem. The nice thing with them is for $89, you get everything included in their service package for the G9, all parts / labor, shipping back and the service for the camera too. The best part, they include the no power correction to the internal screws for all of the G9's they service. If you need a hand, www.camerasandparts.com is the place for service on these. The work is excellent and their pricing and knowledge of these cameras is what I liked.

The display shows a hand icon surrounded by (()), how do I remove it?

The "hand icon" is letting you know the image stabilization is enabled. You really don't want to turn it off so you can get the best possible shots when taking photo's. If you do want to turn it off (although not recommended) you can do this in the MENU selection.

Unknown red icon on screen of Canon MV830 minidv camera

This is the icon to warn you to replace the back up battery which is housed behind the main battery unit. See page 15 of the manual.

Canon G9

While I can't be specific for your camera the "Palm" sign normally indicates that "Anti-shake stabilisation" is operational and although you can normally turn it off it is preferable not to as it improves the quality of your recording especially when using long zoom.
