Question about GE 36 in.JGP970 Gas Cooktop

Poor gas flow to GE cooktop

Installing GE gas cooktop JGP970. Due to dimension for downdraft system and location of gas inlet on cooktop, I have to use a 90 degree elbow between the cooktop and the pressure regulator. Instruction manual says to connect the regulator directly to the cooktop, but seems to imply by a diagram that the installation I used may be OK if installed above a built in oven. Problem: I am hardly getting any gas to the cooktop, only the largest unit will ignite and has a very small flame. From the stub I have used a 24 inch 5/8 OD flexible gas line with 1/2 inch connectors. The inlet on the cooktop is a 3/8. Any suggestions?

depending on which gas it is connect to, may be a bad regulator, your gas line is sufficient. if on LP have gas co. check your tank reg. if natural gas have them check water column pressure

SOURCE: GE 36" Monogram Gas Cooktop - low flame

I would have someone come out. Perhaps a gas plumber first. Gas is not something you want to fool around with yourself.

SOURCE: Ge Monogram Gas Cooktop - won't boil water - burners seem like they are starved for gas

Bret, lets give this a try. 1st look at the regulator. There is an arrow on it that has to point towards the cooktop. Put is on backwards and very little gas flow. I always advise this first as I have seen people tell me it is correct and when I got out there it was reversed. 2nd was this used as a live demo unit on Propane? If you are on natural gas, this will also happen. The 3rd thing I also check for in something in the gas line on the cooktop side. I had a unit that got some packing in the line and at 5 wc for natural gas, it doesn't take much to restrict. Hope this helps.

Can a GE profile black 4 burner with down draft gas cook top be converted to propane gas? How?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Everything I am reading says this unit comes with an LPG conversion Kit. It may have been removed by the detailer / retailer that you purchased it from (when ever that was.)

The 0.0354 orfices are supposed to be in the front of the inside of the cooktop and are labeled LP.
It is a matter of removing the 4 Natural Gas orifices and installing the LP orfices and then adjusting the air-flow of the grill burner Air Shutters as shown in the manual on page 32.

The center nut has to be removed from the top of the internal gas regulator and the mini post / plunger inverted and then the nut is reinstalled.

Just note that any conversions are supposed to performed by a qualified gas technician as stated by the WARNING in the manual on page 30.

The manual is here:
http://www.hammerwall.com/tempmanuals/L0603449.pdf

The step by step instructions are in the product user guide on page 30

or you can go to this link and click on info and guides:

then download the use and care guide.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The flame is too high on my GE Profile gas cooktop

I had the same issue on my jgp975 and sadly I had to purchase a different unit. I use simmer frequently and I made the assumption that low was simmer. Wrong. I believe a true simmer is 450 btu and my unit did not go that low. I had to check the fine print/specs page and on some units the manufacturer had to be called. I did replace with another ge profile that did have the low setting.

I want to replace my Jenn-Air cooktop model 89890. What is the easiest replacement cooktop?

Greetings!
I tried to look up your cooktop and only found it mentioned in several places, and thus did not get a complete description of your unit. What I got leads me to believe that yours is a downdraft model. Whether or not this is correct, you'll need to measure the underside (cutout) measurements of the cooktop and the physical dimensions of your unit within the cutout. Armed with this information, you should be able to make an informed decision. I recently replaced a Jenn-air (downdraft, with switchable cooking modules) and selected a GE profile modle JP 989SK1SS (stainless steel). We also considered Frigidare, Jenn-air and some of the higher enders as well. Our preference boiled down to features, keeping all of the appliances (mostly) in the same brand, and reliability. Ours swapped out very close deminsionally, and the installation was easy and neat. Decide on a brand. Most dealers have a brochure that list all of the critical dimensions of their appliances, and you should be able to decide what's best for you.
Hope this was of some small help. Regards, and good hunting!

the reason for the fitting instruction for the regulator to be connected directly is that flex hoses deteriorate and allow a dangerous situation
AS gas is not in the diy domain I recommend that you get in an accredited gas fitter who will make a solid pipe to allow the fitment of the regulator away from the motor
While he is there he can adjust the regulator to get it all working correctly

Order in black w/matte finish grates & downdraft cover

No. If it is really important order the grates and downdraft cover as replacement parts. This will be expensive probably around $200 - $300.
