1. Disconnect the battery
2 Loosen botls so you can remove the drive belt to alternator.
3. If it has a serpertine belt, then pry with proper tool on the tensioner to remove the belt.
4. Disconnect harness to alternator and ground wire if any and filter condenser if any.
5. Loosen bolts to alternator and remove alternator.
6. If AC equipped, not knowing your belt configuration would require to loosen the AC Belt also, depending if your alternator belts is the first one near the engine, then all belts have to be loosen to remove it. unless #3 applies.

What size battery does my 1989 volvo 240 DL take? I need to replace it and cannot research the cost until I know what size

Just call a couple parts stores and get prices, the cheapest battery is rarely the best deal and they can dispose of the old one for you. They will know what size you need. Also if you have a warranty need in the future they are open seven days a week.

sounds as though you have a bad alternator or a loose alternator belt and the battery is not being charged. while the car is running - check the voltage from the alternator and make sure it is about 13.4 volts DC.

I was wondering where the fuel filter is located in a 1989 Volvo 240 DL station wagon

Check the left front fender area under the hood. If it is not there, it will be located under the car, right wheel area.

Rotor replacing on a 240DL

The rotor has a very strong spring. just keep pulling. Be careful not to bend the shaft (I doubt that could happen). If you get a screwdriver or something to pry with, just try to force it straight up.
