Question about Whirlpool GD5SHAX Side by Side Refrigerator

Fridge won't dispense ice through door.

Whirlpool model GD5SHGXKT01. With the ice hopper full, the auger motor does not run when the dispense lever is pushed. A humming is heard from the door area for a few seconds but the auger does not move and therefore no ice dispensed. Auger is free to turn when hopper is removed from fridge. Where do I start to troubleshoot? A schematic would be very helpful. Fuse somewhere?

The bracket holding the switch that is activated by the ice dispense lever was broken. Appears that someone quickly and forcefully slammed a glass (teenager alert!) on to the lever which broke one side of it loose. The switch, then, was moved far enough back that the lever would no longer activate it. I removed the dispenser module, glued the bracket back in place, and reinstalled everything. Works like new now.

Sounds like your Auger motor has gone bad. Not uncommon for this type and brand of Side by Side. If you want to try and fix it yourself, call a local parts supplier for Whirlpool and give them your model #. They will tell you what the current part number is (sometimes they change). You can order it from them or get it on eBay for less usually. It's not hard to replace I've gathered... but getting access to it seems tricky, especially if it's inside the door. It's packed full of foam and all of the access points seem glued to each other. There doesn't seem to be an access door to get to it, which seems impossible. But I haven't found one yet. It might be underneath the unit come to think of it. If you can get access to the motor, unplug the refrigerator, and it should be as easy as taking the old out and hooking up the new. I need to do this myself! Good luck!

First take the hopper out and let it de-ice completely making sure that it is dry before re-installing it. Make sure that the auger moves when re installed with no ice in it.

My Whirlpool Gold side-by-side refrigerator GS6NVEXSL00 wont give me the ice out the door. It makes ice, but when I press the button on the door nothing happens. Seems like the button went out. HELP!

Does the water dispenser work? Is there a light at the dispenser panel, does it light? Do you hear any noises or motors running when you actuate ice dispenser? You could have a power issue for the dispenser. Some newer whirlpool models have an issue with the wiring leading into the door at bottom being so securley fastened to frame, the lack of movement forces the wires to bend, and in time break, with door usage. If water dispenser works, and you hear no sounds when the ice lever is actuated, then you have a problem with the dispenser panel circuit board. if water works and you hear some sounds when ice lever is actuated, such as a loud popping noise, then you have a bad ice dispenser auger motor, not churning the ice out of the bucket.

Whirlpool Gold Side By Side Ice Dispenser Problems

Instead of what you think the sound is, try and see what is happening when you actuate the ice lever. open freezer door, depress the door light switch, or tape it closed. now actuate the ice dispenser lever, does the flapping door open, that which opens to allow ice from bucket into your glass? Now look at the bucket itself, do you see the gears rotating? remove the bucket from the door, and repeat, do you see the auger shaft rotating?

Either of these are a complex repair, one I would not recommend DIYers to try on their own, for they require taking the door apart, and if not done right, your door may not close properly. Normally I have no problem advising a repair, but there are some i dont, this icemaker system, and compressors.

Ice maker makes ice but can't dispense ice

Please try this. Remove your Removable Ice Bucket Assembly which is where the Auger (corkscrew) is located. You should be able to see the Auger Motor Drive Fork which is located permanently inside the freezer compartment... opposite the end of the Removable Ice Bucket Assembly that you just took out. Close the freezer door and attempt to dispense ice... if you can hear the Auger Motor running as you attempt to dispense ice... then the Auger Motor is OK. Dump out all the ice that is in your Removable Ice Bucket Assembly and wash it out in your kitchen sink with warm water. Reach into your freezer and put your hand on the Auger Motor Drive Fork ... you should be able to rotate it CW or CCW...it is a little hard to turn but it will turn. Position the Auger Motor Fork to a 12:00 and 6:00 o'clock position. Now take your Removable Ice Bucket Assembly and position its Receiver Auger Fork to a 9:00 and 3:00 o'clock ....Re install the Removable Ice Bucket Assembly into the Auger Drive Fork. Close the freezer door and again attempt operate the ice dispenser... you should hear the Auger Motor again run as you press the ice dispenser. Note....at this same time the Ice Chute Door in the Freezer Door should spring open so that ice can fall out. Of course you have no ice in the Auger at this time...but it all this works then future production of ice will fall out. Note...Usually the Auger Motor never fails. but the whole thing can get jammed with ice and not dispense. Also, the the solenoid that operates the Ice Chute Door fails quite frequently. Last but not least... if nothing is happening... it is a control board type problem. Hopes this helps! Handy Henry

Ice maker will not dispense the ice

The auger motor and coupling in the rear may be frozen and won't turn.
Remove the ice bin.
Place a screwdriver or similar device in the forks of the auger and twist counterclockwise till it moves. The replace the ice bin and try again.
It will be difficult to move.
If that does not work. Turn off the fridge and use a hair dryer to hrat the auger gear and motor till it frees up.

Ice dispenser auger does not work.

Hi, On GE refrigerators the motor is not quiet. Open your freezer, remove the ice bin, press the door switch, make sure it turns off the light, and then press the ice dispenser lever. The solenoid will click, which also opens the ice door and the auger motor will turn on and you can definitely hear it. If the motor runs then inspect the auger connection on the rear of the ice bin, its plastic and they break. On some models, like my GE Adora there is a switch just for the ice maker behind the ice bin. If you need more help let me know as with all long distance troubleshooting we try with the information we have. Thanks and Good Luck!

GSS23LSTA SS WILL NOT DISPENSE ICE OR WATER

Open freezer door, pull out the ice bin, push and hold the door switch, and push on the ice dispenser pad / lever. The U shaped auger drive should turn at the back of the freezer behind where the ice bin was. I suspect it is not turning. If this is the case, you have a frozen auger motor. Just thawing it out will not permanently solve the problem, it must be replaced and a " boot " installed over it. It is important to know the exact full model and serial number, as there are several motors to fit various models.

FRIGIDAIRE SIDE BY SIDE ICE DISPENSER

Have same or similar problem. MY problem turns out to be that the Auger turns fine, but there is a little metal blade that attaches to the end of the auger and transfers the spin action into this auger "hopper" (for lack of a better term) which actually accepts the ice that has been moved from the back of the ice bucket by the metal auger and then dispenses the ice into the hopper which falls into the glass. the issue is one of crappy design. It turns out that this little blade has a rectangular opening in the middle that the rectangular end of the auger fits into. If this rectangle opening gets stripped (as mine has done, and ALL are likely to do) then the auger spins, the ice is moved forward but none are picked up by the hopper, and none (or very few) fall into the glass.
Everyone should check to see if this is the case. If so you may need to order a new blade, or a new auger, or a new refrigerator.

Good Luck!

Ice Dispenser Problem - Runs for no reason

I think your problem is in the dispenser lever switch or the lever itself. Don't worry about the upper door switch, it's the dispenser switch that's sending power to the auger motor. I would give you a part number but the posted model number is for a bottom freezer model. Catriver..

Ice dispenser not working

Scorpio, remove the ice bin itself, dump the ice and see if you can move the bin auger by hand by turning the actuator in the rear. If the bin is ok, with the door open and the door switch held in see if the auger motor is turning when pressing the ice lever. If it's not turning the next logical step is to see whether the auger motor is getting voltage when calling for ice. Make sure the door switch is closed. The part number for the auger motor on the posted model is wr60x0202. Hope this gets you going..Catriver.
