Make sure TV is not muted.Make sure the TV is not set to SAP (secondary audio protocol)Make sure TV input is correct (someone may have accidentally pressed the "aux" input button or similar causing the TV to use an input with no sound going to it)Make sure there is not a pair of headphones connected to the TV audio out jack on the side or front of your TV.Check all of the cables that are connected into the back of your TV. (it is possible the TV was moved slightly and a cable has become disconnected or loose)If you have a receiver or surround sound connected to your TV, turn it on and see if you get sound coming from the external speakers.Turn off the TV, cable box, and anything else connected to the TV. Sometimes turning everything off and then back on can fix the problem. If using an "S" video cable into an input on the back of your TV, these cables carry no sound, just video, so make sure you connect an audio cable too.Hook up an external device to the "TV audio out" input. This will be the test to see if it is a TV circuit board malfunction or the speakers are faulty in your TV.If you are connected to a satellite box, use the included remote and go into the "menu". Sound problem

Check what type of cable is connecting your sat box to your TV

If it is via a red/green/blue cable, make sure you also have an additional red and white audio cable connected, and select YPbPr (or component audio) in your TV's menu

We have a picture but no sound, it is hooked up to our surround system and the dvd and radio work and we have sound coming out of the speakers but no tv

Try switching the external/internal speaker switch on the back of the tv to internal. This way you should at least get sound (from the TV not the sound system) when you change the volume of the TV itself.
Explain your set up if you need more help. By that I mean what do you have hooked to the TV and sound system, Satellite or digital cable box DVD ?
Make a note of where all the inputs to the sound system come from.

Look in the menus for a setting to turn the speakers on and off. Make sure there isn't a switch on the back to turn off the internal speakers.

No sound on hitachi 53sdx01b

The first thing to try is rescanning the Freeview channels as it may just be a software corruption...if you have the option of "1st time installation" pick that. Also let me know if there is any buzzing sound coming from the tv..
