Plug it to the computer
hold down the power button on the mp3 player for 10 seconds.
Go to the RCA web site and download the firmware.
Keep it plug into the computer and install the firmware.
Should work like new.

My RCA mp3 OPAL player does not automatically launch when plugged into a computer and is not recognized by any of the various music libraries. It does charge and it does play.Since it was relatively cheap...

The problem turned out to be that I did not have a CD that was supposed to be used to re-initialize the OPAL MP3 player, model 4204-A. The CD was not with the player when I received it. And could not be found since the model was discontinued.

Lyra MC 4204 won't turn on . i just upgraded the firmware of my Lyra MC 4204 with the easyrip app and my mp3 was disconnected from my PC ,,now it won't turn on at all . It looks like it has been bricked ....

Sounds like the firmware install didn't take. Download the firmware install directly from RCA instead of easyRip here:

If your computer does not recognize it, press and hold the play button while connecting the device for upwards of 30 seconds. If that does not work then it is likely the player is unrecoverable.

How do I reset my RCA Opal 8GB mp3?

Not sure what to do about the "not turning on" part, but I have a solution to my problem which was the same as a few other people.

I called 800-878-5779 option #5 (which is their customer service phone number that apparently doesn't appear in any of the materials that were in my package, or in any convenient place on their website).

I have a M4208RD-B which was stuck on "initilizing" and not being recognized by my computer.
According to the customer service folks, I needed a firmware update which seems only to be available through a magical email that they sent to me. The email also contains instructions on how to upload the firmware through a series of timed button pushes.

Here are the instructions included in my email:

M42- Initializing problem or not powering on:
Download firmware upgrade included in this email
Hold play/pause button for 15 seconds
Hold menu button for 10 seconds
Attach M4204 via USB cable while holding play/pause button
This should start the firmware upgrade
Possible an error message of “cant write to disk” will pop up
Firmware upgrade will end with error do not close
Go to My Computer find the drive that holds the MP3 player
Right click scroll down to format, format the player
Run firmware upgrade again

The firmware that they sent me in the email was v, which is not listed under the Opal 4208 on the website. It is under the 4204 player on the website.
As you can see in the above email that they sent to me, I got the firmware update for the 4204. I would think that the update on the website is the same as the one that they sent me in the email, but I'm not 100% sure. To be 100% you could just call the 800 number and get your own email.

Hope this helps.

Mine didn't recognize either, so what I did is go into the device manager, find the opal in the listings, double-click, disabled the device, re-enabled it, at which time it shows that there's a firmware error. I then re-installed the driver from the cd, unplugged the opal, plugged it back in, and for whatever reason, the computer then recognized the opal as a mass storage device, instead of a portable music player. The computer now sees it everytime, and all I have to do is drag and drop any files I want into the opal. Works like a charm. Hopefully RCA will provide an updated firmware program in the near future, but this might work for you for now. Good luck!
