Can not get the second laptop on the internet with the wireless
We have a linksys wireless-g access point router. My son has had a laptop for awhile with no problem getting on the internet. My daughter received a laptop for christmas ... we can not get her on the internet. When we try and load the linksys.. when we are looking for a wireless connection.. all the linksys are 'secured' and need passwords... our network is not a secure network.. ?? can this router only allow one ???

The post says he has a router "linksys wireless-g access point router" ???
If it is only an Access Point then Joed is correct you need the router to access your broadband with more then 1 PC
If you have a wireless access router then here are the instructions:- Easy Solution (you should be so lucky) Sometimes the value for the Wireless Key is written on the underneath of the router, look for SSID (this is the network name) and WEP or WPA key (called the encryption key)
Alternative Method In order to find out your Wireless Network Key you must first use a cable to connect to your router.
Once connected check that you are connected to the internet by opening Internet Explorer
The address or the router is usually one of the following values:-
Try clicking on each and see if you get a logon box popping up
If you do, that is the correct address for your Wireless router, note it down.
If the box has the username and password completed, then click OK
If there is no value for username try "admin" and for the password try one of the following "password", "admin",
Also try nothing for the username and "admin" for the password
Sometimes the value for these are written on the underneath of the router
Once the router page is displayed, look for an item called Wireless Settings. Next see if a further option for Wireless Security exists. The names of these items vary from Router to Router
Once security is displayed the SSID (Network Names) and the WPA or WEP Key can be found.
If there is no security I would set it to WPA or WEP then the original computer connecting will need this value if it is connecting wirelessly

If you are unable to connect your laptop wireless to your Linksys wireless access point/router, the easiest and fastest way to get going is to reset your router to the factory defaults. This will make your router work like the day you bought it.
There are 2 steps involved Reset your router, Setup/Secure a new router
Reset your router: First
Unplug your DSL/Cablemodem from power (not your access point/router) Leave this unplugged for now
On the rear of your Linksys router you will find a small RESET button
With the power still on the router, Press and hold (with a pin/pen tip) the RESET button for 30 seconds.
Release the RESET button a wait 15 seconds for the router to reboot
Unplug your Linksys router from power
Plug your DSL/Cable modem back in to power
Wait 1 minute for the modem to boot up
Be sure the ethernet (cat5) cable from your modem is securely plugged into the WAN port on the back of your Linksys router. This is usually labeled WAN or Internet above the jack
Plug your Linksys router back into power.
You will now be able to connect to the internet with your wireless device. I would advise that you follow the next steps in securing your wireless network.
Setup/Secure a new router Log into your router
Type192.168.1.1 into your web browser and hit enter
In the login fields (case sensitive):
Once in the web interface for your router
Click Wireless tab - Basic Wireless Settings
Find the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field
change this to your new network name (this is the name you will see when you connect through your wireless device)
the default address is 192.168.1.1. if you still can't access you can factory default by pressing and holding the reset button on the back for about 10 seconds. after it restarts the ip address will be 192.168.1.1 leave the username blank and the password will be admin.
You said that the router connected to the modem is acting like an access point. that means the DHCP server on that router must be disabled. The second router is connected to the first with the ethernet port. What you can do, you can enable the DHCP server on the first router and make the second router work as an access point. so that both the computers will be in the same IP address range. If they are already in the same IP address range then you can try to ping the second computer's IP address form the first computer. Click here for more info.
You need to get a router in order to share the Internet connection. The
existing Internet connection (from the DSL/cable modem for instance)
goes into the WAN port of the router/firewall, then you connect the AP
to one of the LAN ports.
Today it is often a better idea to buy a wireless router instead, i.e a
router with built-in wireless AP. They are very inexpensive.
1. Unplug your cable/dsl modem. 2. Unplug your Router 3. Plug in your modem ... wait for it to come completely up. 4. Plug in your WRT54G Router and wait for it to come up. 5. Go to your 1st PC and get into Command Prompt. Type is ipconfig /release .... then type ipconfig /renew 6. Check for internet connectivity. Repeat step 5 for for your second PC.
If your second PC is wireless go into the wireless config utility and search for access points. Connect to your Access point and check for connectivity.
If you still have no internet. Press the reset button on the back of the router for 45 seconds while it is powered on. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
Be sure to lock down your wireless SSID so neighbors and people passing by are unable to connect to your access point and do bad things on your network.
lose internet connection from my second computer that is linked to main computer (main computer has internet connection). Tried to click repair and it said couldn't be repaired contact internet provider?
