Ide install problem

Haveing a problem with a dell precision workstation 650 was using a scsi harddrive that would not load windows (had to keep the windows xp cd in for it to boot )
i decided to add a 500 gb internal pata hard drive while keeping the scsi in as a master ,
i find that the bios sux but besides that the bios will find the 500 gb hard drive , then the computer will boot to windows xp , but windows xp will not find or mount the pata 500 gb hard drive
is this a problem with windows , or a conflict with the scsi / ata hard drives ??
or did i just forget some things ??

There may be some conflict in the jumper settings so just check the jumpers and try to connect it should detect the device ...

if you still persist the problem then just check the ide bus cable there may be some problem in that ...

replace the ide cable and try it ... make sure that the ide slot is working properly ...

The answer is Yes.

Connect just the EIDE harddrive from the Compaq.
Make sure the correct jumper pins on the back of the harddrive, have a jumper cap on them to set them to Single;

OR,

The IDE harddrive model you have may Not use a jumper cap on any jumper pins, for some models of harddrives, to set the harddrive as Single.

Look up the harddrive jumper settings on the internet.
Start with the model number on the label of the harddrive.

Example; WD2500JB
Western Digital 250GB harddrive that is IDE. (EIDE)

You will need a SATA optical drive now.
BIOS Setup > Boot Options > Set the first boot device to CDROM.
Install Windows disk.

Use IDE harddrive, and IDE optical drive on the same flat ribbon IDE cable?
Can be done, but usually is a HEADACHE, and MAY not work.
BIOS looks to see what drives are connected. It looks for the drive with the Operating System on it. (Windows)

Now put a disk in the optical drive. Time has to be divided between the harddrive, and the optical drive.
IF it does work; when you are using the computer, and the optical drive you will know the real meaning of Slow.

Have a SATA optical drive?

Hi . I have trouble with Dell optiplex GX280 . In the PATA I have two devices . DVD and HD . Both set with jumper . DVD as Slave and HDD as Master ....But the install os cannot detect HDD . where is...

I don't know where the trouble is without more information.
Some tips/information I will list, however,

1) The master harddrive that came with the computer, and has the operating system on it, is a SATA unit.

Therefore any harddrive installed along with it has to be installed as a Slave drive.

BIOS will look for the harddrive with the operating system on it. This harddrive has to be set as a Master drive. (Primary Drive in BIOS)

Installing a harddrive that is a PATA (IDE) unit, AND a PATA optical drive on the same flat ribbon cable, has to be done accordingly;

A) It depends on what flat ribbon cable you have.
There is a 40 wire cable with a 40 pin connector. (39 actually. One socket hole is not used)

There is an 80 wire cable with a 40 pin connector. (39 actually)

2) Proper method of using jumpers on an IDE (PATA) harddrive, and connecting the flat ribbon cable,

SATA drive not detected

If you will be loading xp on the new drive,You will just need to press F6 during the setup when ask if you want to install 3rd party driver, and follow the instruction and put the SATA driver disk in when ask.(Even during xp setup It will say SCSI device until all the drivers for it are loaded)

Dell Precision Workstation 650 series

Is the hard drive showing up in the bios? You can get an adapter to attatch it to a desktop pc to test if its working ok and get any important data off too. They only cost a few pounds off ebay.

Hope that helps?

Unable to Install MS windows

It sounds like you have a hardware conflict. I would take out 1 of the harddrives (slave), and all of the boards (modem, etc.), then install windows, then add the other things (boards, slave hard drive, etc) after installing windows.
Let me know how you make out.
