Question about Computers & Internet

Computer has a static screeching sound when I play audio

Have a dell optiplex 745, small frame. When ever I play any audio - I tunes, CNN audio or a CD - get a static disturbance like in a very bad radio. I have already replaced the motherboard, installed audio comdecs files without any luck. I have changed the speakers to Bose speakers with no improvement in sound quality. Listening to the sound through headphones attached to the computer from the headphone outlet in the front of the computer does not improve the sound quality at all.

I am really trying to avoid formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the entire Windows XP system.

Would appreciate any assistance.

So the problem is in your sound card. Change your sound card to Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card. That is if you love to listen to music, watch movies, and play games. Have fun with it.

Best regards

The issue is most likely with the sound card drivers but there might not be any updated drivers available, you can also buy a sound card for the pc. I actually had the same problem you have. I just got myself a PCI Sound card from creative and its been great since, just remember to plugin your sounds into the new sound card and you should be fine.

the integrated sound cards on some motherboards are not that great so a extra sound card will be great for you.

Chris, what happens when you plug the hdmi connector into the TV and your adapter, while your computer is running and connected to the adapter?
Are there drivers required for the adapter?

As an alternative, you could install a video board in your Dell that includes an HDMI output. I have a laptop with one, and connect it to my TV often; works fine.

Audio driver for dell optiplex and hp desktop

Here's the way it works;

A) Do NOT post your email 'addy'.

B) DO post the Dell Optiplex model number, and the HP product number.

For example mine? At the moment Dell Optiplex 745.

The HP Product Number is on the back of the computer, in a white Service Tag. P/N = Product Number.

This way I can guide you to the Driver Download page, and step by step guide you in downloading, AND installing the audio driver/s.

Installing 5.1 channel pci sound card

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/sm/index.htm

Computer Cover

Depending on what model you have, you may have 1 PCI expansion slot, or up to 4 PCI expansion slots.

Small Form Factor computer (SFF) = 1 PCI slot
Small Desktop computer = 2 PCI slots
Small Mini-Tower computer = 4 PCI slots

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/ug/specs.htm

You need an open available PCI slot, and may not have one with the Small Form Factor computer, or Small Desktop computer.

2) The Sound Card needs to be a Low Profile one.
Maximum size depends on what model it is.

3) Computer on, and Windows running, install the sound card's Installation Disk (CD) in the optical drive of the computer, and load the software.

After the drivers, and if you also chose the effects manager, are installed; close all windows, and go back to your desktop screen.
Turn your computer off normally.

{Your computer will not use the sound card drivers, until the Sound Card is physically installed }

4) FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions, with your Unplugged from power computer, and open the computer case.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static BEFORE working on your computer.

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

5) Physically install the Sound Card.

Find an open PCI slot, and remove the expansion slot cover from the metal frame of the computer case, that matches up to this PCI slot.
(Note the PCI slot will not be directly in line, with the expansion slot cover. It is 'one over' )

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/sm/cards.htm#1104768

6) Attach your audio cables to the Sound Card. Plug the computer into power. WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

Go to the system task bar at the bottom of the desktop screen, and click on the Volume icon. (Looks like a speaker)
Set the Volume where you wish.
(Also you may want to Right-click on the Volume icon, and make sure your audio { Sound }, is Enabled )

If you do not have the Installation Disk with the needed software on it, go to the Sound Card's support website, and download the software.
Post the manufacturer name of the Sound Card, and it's model number, and I'll guide you with the above.
