Question about Acer Aspire 5050-3242 Notebook

PC laptop running slow, could be malware

My toshiba laptop is a little over a year old. I removed superfluous start up stuff right when I got it. I had AVG, and some ad aware stuff, but I hear malware has gotten extra insidious. The computer is especially slow when I wake it up after it's been sleeping and after about 15 min or so it's back to normal. My friend suggested removing AVG and I did. Still pretty slow at boot up. Any suggestions for the best free antivirus and malware stuff? I'd even pay for something if I knew it was going to work. had a very bad experience with Norton a couple of years back. Upon installing it it freezed up my entire computer. Must have already had a bug that broke it in self defense.

thanks!

I already have windows defender. I think the new malware is smart enough to go around it.

Also, just for kicks I tried downloading the latest Windows Defender updates. But one had an error when I tried to open it, and the other had an error in the downloading process. This leads me to believe there's some malware that is preventing me from downloading the very thing that could erase it.

A slow laptop

Many things can slow a laptop down. First, how old is this machine? Older machines must work harder to run today's websites and applications. If the machine is not that old, check to see how much RAM the machine has. Many laptops only have 2GB or less. This makes them run slower with the newer software and websites. Consider upgrading to at least 4GB if the machine is capable. Next, look at the hard drive. How much free space does it have? If there is less than 10GB free, you could be having space issues causing slowdowns. The OS and applications use free hard drive space during operation, but if the space is not available, this can slow down or freeze applications. Next, check the Recycle Bin. If there are a lot of files in it, it takes up space that can be used for the OS and programs. Clear it out, or better yet, empty it. Next, check the ventilation holes and fan assemblies for the unit. if the vents are clogged and/or the fan is not working, this will cause the CPU to run hot. This will slow down processing and possibly cause freezing and eventually, failure. Next, look at your browser. How many add-on toolbars does it have? Many programs add stuff to the browser without your even being aware. Each of these takes a little speed of the browser at work. Consider removing any toolbars that you aren't using or don't want. You can go to Remove Programs under Control Panel and see these there for removal. Last possibility is Virus or Malware. Even the best antivirus software won't find everything. You can download a free version of Malwarebytes at malwarebytes.com. This will find almost anything that is not desired. Any one of theses issue, and often, a combinations of them, work to slow down laptops to a crawl.

Computer runs slow

It sounds like you might have some type of virus or other malware.

Here's some things I would recommend to start with:

  1. Install and run a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes, removing any malware items found.
  2. Run a second scan using the ESET online scanner, removing any malware items found
  3. Install and run ccleaner to clean up unneeded temporary files.
If these steps don't resolve the problem, you may want to seek professional help.

Get rid viruses

Hey Camry, if you believe your computer is running slow due to viruses then run an antivirus program. I recommend AVG AntiVirus (it's also free). Before you download it make sure you uninstall other antivirus programs on your computer if you have any. More than one can really mess with your computer. Once you download it, scan your computer. Then scan for malware (most likely you have malware and not virus). Download Spybot or malwarebytes (this should not interfere with AVG) and scan for malware. Then just restart your computer and hopefully it goes a little bit faster. I say little bit because usually there more problems than just malware issues. Such as not enough space on you hard drive. Delete things you do not NEED. Freeing up space can really improve the speed of your computer. Also, if your computer is getting hot (if you feel it or you hear your fan running full speed) I suggest you get a laptop fan. My laptop has no virus or malware and only has half of the memory used and is 5 years old (Dell latitude) but when it gets hot (my average temp for dual core: 75 degrees C). This really slows down my computer. You can download programs that will tell you the temp of your laptop. Also make sure you shut your laptop down once in a while to clear the RAM.
Sorry it is so lengthy but there is so much that one can do to make the laptop go faster. I hope this helps you though, if it does not give me your feedback. Good luck. - Joe.

My computer is running very slow.what can I do to speed it up?

It depends on what's running slowly. It could be that you have too many background programs running, or that your internet is slow.

If you're booting slowly, go to Start>Run... and type msconfig, then look through your startup entry and remove superfluous things. Only remove things IF YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE or you could seriously mess something up.

Also try downloading ccleaner to clean up some stuff on your drive. I think the cache cleaner and registry cleaner will help you.

Run an antivirus scan just in case you're infected with some virus. Make sure you're using updated antivirus definitions. If you need one, you can get AVG free or Microsoft Security Essentials. Both are good programs and are free (though AVG might nag you a bit).

Try defragmenting your system by right-clicking on My computer>Properties and finding the defragment option. That will help compact your programs to help them run a little faster.

If all else fails, you might need more ram. You should be able to find RAM compatible with your system here. Depending on whether you're running a 32bit or 64 bit system (in windows 7 click help and support, then about my computer. In XP right click my computer>Properties to find out), you can either support 4GB or more (4GB for 32 bit). You have 2 DIMM slots, so depending on how much RAM you already have (it will tell you when you see whether you're 32 or 64 bit), you'll need to upgrade accordingly.

Also go through your programs (XP: Open the Control panel>Add/Remove Programs. 7: Control Panel>Programs and Features) and remove things you either never use or use rarely. That can help speed things up.

Also check out my article on cleaning your PC. There might be some stuff on there you don't need to do, but it has some decent tips (in my opinion) on keeping your computer trimmed up and running like new. Best of luck!
