In between the scanner bed and the menu part of the printer is where you lift the door to get to the ink.

Obviously something is wrong with the cartridge or the chip since it was working before. Try buying a new oem cartridge or even an affordable compatible cartridge online, install it, and I'll bet your problem is resolved.

The diagnostic setup program assumes all the parts are loaded, including color ink cartridge.

In normal printing you can set the preferences for black ink only, no color in the Lexmark control panel software.

I have poor print quality on my Lexmark 4550

That obviously shouldn't happen. Did you print an alignment page after you inserted the new cartridges? There could also be some clogged nozzles on the new cartridges. If you haven't contacted Lexmark technical support through www.lexmark.com, suggest you do so.

Where do you put the ink cartridges????? Can't see an obvious flap or space to put them!

You're in luck... Lexmark has the documentation available for download here: http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/2007/4650/en.html

See page 15.

If this solved your problem, would you kindly rate it as such?
