Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Need to get rid of an object on my WindowsXP desktop - activeX?

In attempting to copy a link to a web site onto my desktop, I inadvertantly copied an object that looks just like the web page itself. I doesn't have any controls on its frame, however (no "blue bar" at the top, or "X" in the upper right to close it). And it doesn't appear as a file when I "explore" to the desktop folder.

Any ideas about how to make it go away?

Try clicking on the object icon with the right button of the mouse and chosing delete. Try also restarting the computer to see if the object disappears.

How to send a 'Favorite' site

You didn't say HOW you want to send it.

But, in email, you can copy the URL (in the address bar at the top) and paste it into the email.

For me, if you put it on a separate line, this usually creates a clickable link.
If not, the recipient can copy the link and paste it in the address bar to have it go to that web site.

How do i register on 2go?

You can use the Regsvr32 tool (Regsvr32.exe) to register and unregister object linking and embedding (OLE) controls such as dynamic-link library (DLL) or ActiveX Controls (OCX) files that are self-registerable. This may be necessary to troubleshoot some issues with Windows, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or other programs. It is also frequently used by program hacks.

1.) Copy the files you would like to register to [C:\WINDOWS\system32]
2.) Go to the command prompt Start --> Run --> cmd
3a.) To install/register the file type in: regsvr32 file.dll or regsvr32 file.ax
3b.) To uninstall the files type: regsvr32 -u file.dll or regsvr32 -u file.ax
4.) Some type of message should be displayed that says you successfully registered or unregistered the file

I get this massage when i start use msn games ActiveX Objects Missing 2 Messenger games require ActiveX objects in order to play. Please verify that you have the ability to install ActiveX objects...

That usually indicates some settings in your Internet Options have been changed in your security settings, and it is blocking the installation of Active X add ins for your Browser.

With your Internet Explorer open, click on TOOLS > Internet Options.
Click on the Tab Security.
The Icon for Internet should be highlighted.
Look for a button " Restore Defaults" and click on it. Then click on the Apply Button.
Then click on the Tab General and Click on the Delete button in the center of the screen.
Delete the Cookies and Temporary Internet Files

Close Internet Explorer, and reopen it.

Try your games again and see if it prompts you to install the Active X add ins it needs to run the games.

If you need to reply, use the "add a comment" link.

Thank you.

My computer Desktop is not running.

Hi hichris_4u

You should be able to replace the Explorer.exe. Type in the command prompt expand C:\I386\explorer.ex_ %systemroot%\explorer.exe This will expand a new copy to the windows directory.

You should also download a new version of SP2 and reinstall it. You also could download a clean copy of SP2 Click the Download button. The file is 266MB. Create a folder on the C:\ root called SP2 and download it there. Create another folder called SP2 files now at a command prompt type C:\SP2\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /x it’ll ask you to specify an directory so point it to the SP2 Files folder and let it extract there. Now type in the command prompt expand C:\SP2 Files\I386\explorer.ex_ %systemroot%\explorer.exe to expand a new copy to the windows directory.

If you get an error on destination, try expand C:\SP2 Files\I386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe

If you expanding fron the I386 from the C:\ root try expand C:\I386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe

If all fails, try and download SP2 onto another machine and then burn it to a CD for install.

Good Luck,

Mark

Desktop Restore Issue

It sounds like you had some web content that is no longer available as part of your active desktop. I copied the instructions for you on how to change it right out of windows help file. Good luck!

To add Web content to your desktop
  1. Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
  3. On the Web tab, click New, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
You must be connected to the Internet to add active Web content to your desktop.
  • To browse Microsoft's Desktop Gallery Web site, in the New Desktop Item Wizard, click Visit Gallery. The New Desktop Item Wizard opens when you click New on the Web tab.
  • To select a different Web site, type the Web site address, or click Browse to locate it.
