Re: dvd/cd wont play on computer
I have seen that issue in Vista on a Sony Vaio. I had to uninstall the DVD drive in device manager and let it reinstall. There also maybe a firmware update for the drive to remedy the issue. See if you can boot from a CD or DVD. If you can, then it is a Windows issue.

If the computer was working before you changed the power supply then likely you have not connected all the header wires properly. Check your wiring again. If you replaced the power supply because the computer was not working, then you may have an issue other than power supply, such as a bad motherboard.
the first thing you should do if it don't start is unplug everything (memory, cards - the lot) from the mobo apart from the power supply and turn it on.
if you get nothing, it's either the power supply or the mobo. check the power supply actually works, if not that then it's mobo.
if you get beeps, plug things in one at a time, when you arrive at the condition you started with, that's the bit that's wrong.
You can buy a mobile enclosure for the dvd writer with a 12 V power adapter . Here is an example :http://eu.startech.com/HDD/Enclosures/USB-to-Slimline-SATA-CD-DVD-Optical-Drive-Enclosure~SLMSOPTB:
did you remove all of the original software as this can cause a software problem. you will need to remove the new software and the old software.then shut down the computer then. let it start up. turn back off again install the dvd writer then turn back on now should load the proper driver for the dvd rom. then install the software.
if you have cd writer and dvd rom then change your cd drive with cd/dvd writer because in the case of cd writer and dvd rom it gives error but sometimes the dvd play also but computer freeze from sometime and when we copy data then give us error messages i give you suggest to buy new cd/dvd writer
If you have posted the correct model of writer, then it only supports the writing of DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, but CD-R and CD-RW disc writing are supported, and it should play all forms of DVD, so it won't burn DVD-R and RW discs, but if it wont play all types then try a cd/dvd cleaner, but to be honest when writers start playing up the lens is normally faulting and a replacement drive will be required.
