My PS3 loads fine but after about 10 mins of playing just shuts itself down. I poer it off leave it 5 mins then power up again and it works for about 10 mins then does the same again. No vents are blocked and it stands in its own space on the floor - any ideas?

Re: ps3 keeps switching off
It's overheating. That's why it works longer the first time and you have to wait a few minutes for it to cool. Try using some compressed air and cleaning the vents out below. If that doesn't work then you'll have to remove and replace the thermal compound on the GPU and CPU.

You need to either RESTORE FILE SYSTEM or RESTORE PS3 SYSTEM. Here is how to do it.
HOW TO GO TO THE RECOVERY MENU OF PS3 SYSTEM
1. Make sure the ps3 is plugged in (stand by mode). 2. Put out your usb cable for the controller and the controller itself (do not connect yet). 3. Hold down power firmly, ps3 will turn on and then turn off, release power button when t turns off. 4. Hold down power again, you will hear a beep and then a double beep, when you hear that double beep release the power button. 5. Now you should be seeing something in your monitor that say "Connect usb controller", do just that. 6. After connecting the controller press PS button. 7. You are now in the recovery menu. 8. To fix the problem of corrupt data you can choose #3. 9. If you want to format your hard drive choose #5. Be aware that this option will delete everything that is in your hard drive. 10. Remember that doing #3 and #5 is not 100% to fix the problem of corrupt data, I say about 70%.
your ps3 could be in the process of breaking i got the ylod just last night your warranty has expired you could just run your ps3 untill it breaks then open it up and try to repair it but thats a tricky thing to do. and dont leave games in it incase it breaks they will be trapped inside, my modern warfare 2 is stuck in mine -.-
your PS3 probably overheated. it does this with 2-3 hours of nostop play. you need to cocheck it every 20-30 mintues after one hour and take breaks to let it cool down, so it doesnt malfunction. i would take it to somewhere like Game Stop and have it shipped for repair. i would also leave it unplugged and not try to turn it on, for the risk of further damage.
switch off console and hold the power buttom down till it beeps twice .then release it and immidatley after that hold it down again ,
then u will have recovery menu which enables u to reset ps3
(harddrive will get wiped out)
when it happens, give it some time, like 5-10 min. the ps3 is most likely accessing the hard drive, and if it is, shutting down in the middle of it could currupt your hdd. if it doesnt work, even after 10 min, call sony tech support, but if it works fine afterwords, i dont see why it would be neccessary. unless it gets worse, i think you should just turn it on, turn it off after a few min, then back on, and then play.
