Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, it would have to be determined if the Maxtor One Touch is the one really with issue or is it the USB port of the laptop. Pls try to connect a USB device such as a digicam, flash/thumbdrivee to the USB port of the laptop. Check if the laptop can recognize, access and read/write to that USB device. If yes, then the laptop's USB port(s) is generally OK, and the Maxtor One Touch is indeed the one in question. If not, then it is the USB port of the laptop that has to be attended to.

Pls post back your Operating System.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Plut it to another usb port, try a few times, try diffrent usb ports if that doesn't work turn the laptop completely off unplug and remove battery for 2 minutes. Plug in the ac and the hard drive turn the laptop on it should detect it.

this is just a start so report back with results.

Ibm netvista shuts down on start up

1. if possible check and see how dusty the system is inside.. used compressed air cans to dust it off.. don't touch any components... watch esd so ground yourself while you're at it
then test
2. you're power supply may be dying: ground yourself to the same ground as the computer (watch for esd) and replace the powersupply.
then test.
the keyboard or controller may be damaged, check for resource conflicts in your bios related with keyboard (make sure no other items are using the same irq's.. check plugs, test with other key board.. replaced motherboard.
random shut down could also mean that the cpu is overheating.. make sure the cpu fan is undusted and working.

My windows shut down om my acer vista labtop it stays it shut down because of a os problem

If you can't determine the reason for the shutdowns then your ultimate solution is to reload Windows using the recovery CDs or DVDs that came with your notebook computer. Remember that doing this will cause you to lose all the data on the C: partition of your Acer, if you have a D: partition that usually is not touched.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
