Turn the computer off.
Unplug the AC adapter.
Remove the battery.
Flip the computer upside-down.
Look at the various "bay" covers.
Under one of them will be a slot for RAM.
Take a screwdriver, and remove the cover.
You might either find existing RAM (one stick or two),
or you might find an empty slot.
Now, the difficult part is purchasing RAM that will be compatible with your "antique" (1997) laptop. I highly advise that you take the computer, the battery, and the power-supply to a computer-store, so that they can sell you "compatible" memory -- the "wrong" memory won't fit, or won't work, or will only add 1/4 or 1/2 the amount of RAM present on the stick.
Laptops are notoriously difficult to upgrade with one exception. Luckily, that exception is one of the quickest and best ways to improve the performance of your Acer laptop. Adding more RAM will speed up your laptop and boost its performance. Be aware, though, that Acer is also notorious for its "hidden memory compartment" under the keyboard.
Adding RAM to Your Acer Laptop
Unplug your laptop from the AC power source and remove the battery.
Protect your computer from static electricity by grounding yourself with an ESD wrist strap or through another grounding method.
Locate the memory access door for the main memory module. It should be on the back of your computer.
Unscrew the memory access door and remove it.
Remove the RAM module by applying gentle outward pressure to the securing clips on either side of the RAM module until they release.
Rotate the RAM module upward to a 45 degree angle and slide it out of the slot.
Align the new RAM module with the tab in the connector slot.
Slide it firmly into place and gently rotate it downward until it clicks into place.
Replace the memory access door.
Replace the battery and power up the computer. It should recognize the added memory and reconfigure itself for use.
There are two memory slots which support PC2700/333 Mhz memory, maximum 1024 per slot.
ECS suggests using identical/matched pairs of chips from the same manufacturer for their units.
In most laptops there is an access panel which when removed gives you direct access to the memory chips for replacement. I couldn't find a mainboard diagram for this unit so I am unable to see if the memory slots are adjacent on the board but there is little reason they shouldn't be. You should be able to access both slots once the proper access panel is opened.

I assume the power LED is on when you boot up the laptop and the power adapter is OK.
If I understand you, the RAM module is in memory slot A and not in slot B. If not the RAM module needs to be in slot A.
When a laptop doesn't the RAM module may only needs re-seating or the RAM module is faulty. Re-seat the RAM module, and if this then take the RAM module and get it tested at your friendly computer shop.
There are two slots for memory on that laptop and it will take a maximum of 2GB of RAM. The memory type is
1.8-V SODIMM DDR-2. The cover ont he bottom if the laptop is easy to access and add more memory.

To get at some parts takes some doing, but the AVERATEC 4200 AV4265-EH1 is user upgradable. The 80GB hard drive and one of the 256MB memory slots sit under a large bottom panel held in place by seven small screws. Removing two additional screws frees the hard drive. To reach the second RAM slot, you have to loosen one additional screw (labeled "D" in the manual but not on the notebook) inside the bottom compartment, pop out keyboard's four top latches, and lift it off. The RAM slot, the only exposed component beneath the keyboard, is easy to find. Another 256mb run both will surfice.
