Question about Bose Companion III Computer Speakers

Bose Companion 3 series II speakers aren't producing sound (imac)

I just took my Bose Companion 3 speakers out of the package and hooked up everything to my iMac 20" exactly as described (I've re-done the assembly a couple of times and re-checked every connection - they're all fine). For some reason, my speakers don't make a sound.

I can see that there's power to the speakers - the light is on. I can also see that my iMac headphone jack works because if I plug headphones into the jack I can hear music. I even tried hooking the speakers up to a new macbook and they don't produce any sound there either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just to be clear - these speakers connect through the computer's headphone jack. There is only one headphone jack on an iMac, it's in the back of the machine. Because these speakers connect through the headphone jack, I don't believe that drivers have any applicability to this problem.

Of course, if I'm wrong about this, please let me know. Again, I welcome any help or suggestions!

Yes, I know about tapping the control pod. The pod is on, it's just not producing any sound. Thanks for the suggestion, though, I appreciate it. Further suggestions would be appreciated if anyone has any ideas.

Sometimes my C3"s suddenly stop working. When I press any of the 2 speaker buttons on the keyboard the speaker icon displays along with a mute looking symbol. I called Apple. They told me to shut down and unplug for 3 minutes. Turn off the C3"s as well. Then fire up the iMac and then turn on the bose. Don't know why that works but it did for me.

Let me know if this helps.

Did you tap the control pod? That turns them on.

From what I've read, the imac has a 3.5mm (.138) jack while the Bose jack is 1/8 (.125). very small difference in size (.013), but enough to cause problems.

Can I hook up the Bose Companion 2 series speakers to my HDTV and get acceptable sound?

Well if you currently find the sound of the Bose acceptable and your inbuilt HD TV speakers poor, then the answer is yes. Should you not like the sound of the Bose, plugging them into an HD TV won't make them sound any better :-)

Just use the headphone out of your HD TV to connect. You may find you need to enable the headphone socket/volume via the menu settings on your HD TV

Loud hum when Bose Companion 3 Series II speakers are turned on.

I had the same problem for many months. I asked a sound & video professional and he suggested I move the subwoofer away from any power source. I had the subwoofer next to my UPS. Once separated and moved all wiring away from the power supply (about 12") the low bass hum was practically gone.

Loud hum with static when speakers turned on

There is def. a loose connection somewhere in your system. This is a grounding problem within the system if nothing else. Def. a "lazy" connection somewhere.

Bose Companion 3 Series II not working (Mac)

The speakers seem to be muted by default - you'll see that the LED is yellow/amber. Tap the control pod - the LED will turn green and speakers will work. I felt like such an idiot after I spent almost an hour trying to figure this out. (This feature should be more prominent in the manual.)
