I know German ... actually I also I looked up the manuals (in English & German .. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-00657-20&cID=134&pID=10625), here's what page 39 stated:

1. Tools > Settings > Language

in German that would be

1. Funktionen (wrench icon in bottom right) > Einstellungen > Sprache

Once you get in that menu, you'll see "text" ... once you change that to English you'll be able to read the other options.

  • Press TOOLS (the spanner icon in the bottom right of the screen with WHERE TO and VIEW MAP)

  • Press LANGUAGE (the lips icon)
This takes you to a screen with 3 items on it; VOICE, TEXT LANGUAGE and KEYBOARD

Press VOICE and select the name of an English speaking person to change the voice instructions to English.
Press TEXT LANGUAGE and change it to English or American English if you're in the USA

The TEXT LAGUAGE should be showing DEUTCH beside it (the German word for German)

I'm an american in germany and try to work the garmin but when i switch my map to germany it only works in the german language... any help??
To change the Voice Settings
  • Press TOOLS
  • then SETTINGS
  • then LANGUAGE
Press VOICE LANGUAGE and select an english voice

If your text is also in german
  • Press TEXT LANGUAGE
  • Select ENGLISH
and press OK. When you go back to the main screen it should all operate in english.

The words on the screen are in German. How do we change it to English?
You didn't specify your unit, but here are the instructions for Garmin Nuve 200 series navigators.

Go to:
Tools > Settings > Language > Text > American English
You may need to reset the voice languagealso if it is speaking foreign tounge.Hope this helps.

Foreign language text on GPS device
Click on the wrench tool button, then the picture of the sprockets which is system, then click the lips/mouth. Once there, you should be able to change the voice and text to English. Just click on one of the boxes to change it to your chosen language.

Garmin powered up in wrong language! German vice English!
Therecan be 2-3 choices under languages. One being the voice that speaks to you, and the other, the text on screen you read. Go back in and make sure that both are set to english.
