You possibly haven't installed the driver properly.
If a wizard that comes up as soon as you plug the device in, Just let it detect the device and then go to Control Panel, and System, and Device Manager, and double click on the device driver, or if it isn't there, double click on the unknown device with the yellow exclamation mark and hit the Driver tab, Install Driver, and choose the 'Let me choose the driver' option, and navigate to where you unzipped that driver downloaded to, and click on the driver, wait for it to finish installing and reboot.
That's how you install drivers you download off the web.

Let me know how you get on..
Good Luck!

First plugin the sandisk to your usb port, and then check from Windows Explorer, does your sandisk cruzer detected? you'll get a new drive letter besides your local drive or
named "removable disk".
If you do see it then just do format (you'll lose the U3), copy, store, overwrite it again and again as you like.
If you still need the U3 application, pls read this:

When I plug my new SanDisk 2GB Cruzer USB 2.0 Flash Drive into my computer, it says the drive is read only- How can I fix this?

If this is the U3 SanDisk Cruzer....U3 drives present themselves as two devices. One of them appears as a read-only CD drive that contains all the **** programs and the other is the writeable USB stick part. It comes with two partitions on it, one for data, and the other called "U3 Partition" which is read-only.

Data recovery

Because it formats the device, if the restore option didn't work then it sounds like bad news. I would recommend searching your pc for the images just in case the U3 uninstaller cached them somewhere during the process.

Sandisk flash drive

Is the account that your tying to access the drive with an Administrator account? If not, Log in as Administrator and try to access the new drive. If you ARE using Administrator privileges on the vista machine, the problem lies in the U3 smart driver. Try downloading and installing the drivers for the XP SP2 os on scan disks website, If vista rejects the install package off of the scan disk website, let me know and i'll extract the drivers and build an install for them for you.
