Question about Dell Optiplex GX270SFF (5U825) Burner

1 Answer

Dell replaced my original dvd drive (Phillips 8631) with a Phillips 8801. It worked for awhile, but after reloading the operating system the dvd decoder software is gone. Can someone help me find the DVD decoder software for the Phillips DVD + RW DVD8801? Thanks

When you say decoder software, do you mean software that let you play DVD movies and such or is this a specific application or program used for other tasks?

Hello. DVD drive for Dell laptop does not read any CD now? No drivers conflics, showing working fine. Is this a hardware or softwere issue?

I had the same issue with my laptop from Dell. I purchased it in 2005, and by 2009 I had the burner unit replaced 7 times. They would work for a short time, and then stop burning. After awhile they wouldn't even play disks, never mind burning them. I never received a satisfactory answer from Dell as far as why I had to keep replacing the unit. They just kept sending me replacements for as long as my warranty was good. I had purchased and extra 4 years of warranty thankfully enough. I have over 30 years of experience with computers, and have never seen so many of the same hardware item replaced in such a short time. I think the reality of the situation is that Dell buys the cheapest units they can get their hands on. They are not to worried about warranty replacements as they send them back to the manufacturer. Once you are out of warranty, as I was after the last time the unit quit on me, their telephone people then tell you to replace your computer with a newer one as yours is just so old now.

You can try and reload the driver from the Dell site for your laptop. If you go to their supports site and enter your Service Tag number you will get a list of all of the drivers that are specific to your machine. Download the drive for your burner, and then double click it to install the driver. Most units have more than one type of burner listed so be careful to make sure you download the correct file. Hopefully that will take care of the issue. If not, and you still have a warranty, contact their support line and have them send you a new unit.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you in resolving your issue. Should you need further information or assistance please do not hesitate to let us know.

Dell inspiron 1525 blank dvd r not regognized

You will need to use a different brand of blank DVD-R disc, some DVD-R disc will not work with some optical drives. Try using a Sony or Phillips DVD-R discs, these two brands work best.

Labtop will not log into windows

I assume you mean, lap top :). It can sit on the TOP of your LAP, hence the nick-name. It's actually called a NOTEBOOK PC, but most ppl call it laptop anyhow :).

Since you do not explain what you DO see when you start the machine, I can only assume certain things.

First, we will assume the hardware is fine. Mouse, kbd, hard drive, cdrom, screen, system board, everything "starts" perfectly, and you see the DELL screen. After this point, there could be several bugs. You could have a corruption on the hard drive data area. (Although the hd might be reading as OK, the platters inside the device could be faulty, causing data loss/corruption.) Have you tried another hard drive? Also, have you used your Dell diagnostic cd's to run a test? Those discs come with each new dell. If you got it used, you can order them from

Now, assuming you pass the tests, then it is time to wipe and reload Windows.

Assuming you failed a test, you write down the error code, contact Dell, and see what that error indicates. Sometimes its just bad memory, and you can "get outta jail free" for only 35 bucks. (ok not QUITE free, but very inexpensive, considering). Sometimes its a failed board and you'll need to scrap it on ebay for parts, or drop about 200 bucks for a refurbished board. (sorry, but it happens).

I hope the only issue you have is a bad hard drive. That will give you the chance to not only replace your drive, but, UPGRADE it to a much higher storage capacity.

GOOD news is, if you DO have to replace the entire machine, the Dell OUTLET ( has NIIIIICE refurbished computers at less than HALF their original cost! You can sometimes get a $1400 notebook (with EVERYTHING) for about $600 bucks! I dont mean a ****-top either, I mean a 64 bit dual core CPU with 4 gigs ram, 320 gig SATA hard drive and DVD burner with Wireless built in! You can take it to taco bell and play world of warcraft during lunch! Or use the built in webcam for face to face meetings! I got one on my tax rebate and still had enough money left to pay my rent. Course, my gf has swindled it away from me, I never get to use the thing until she has a question, ha ha.

Good luck.

Windows XP wont read DVDS and resolution sucks.

You will need to restore the original software installation. If your warranty is still in effect you will want to contact Dell for service, this is the best possible opportunity for a complete recovery and a happier outlook

The drive doesn't read dvd

If it use to read try the following.
1. Reload the dvd driver. It is the set of instructions that lets the dvd drive work with your operating system. Sometimes you can google the name of your dvd drive and download the updated driver for your operating system.
ex. search for "Seagate Mx960A dvd driver download"
2. After you sucessfully download the new driver then reboot or restart your pc so it will reload the drivers.
Good luck
