Question about Zenith HDSAT520 DirecTV DTV Receiver

Open Question

Unable to display Dialogue Box on TV screen

I have just purchased a Celestial DV8800HD digital set top box for use with my Sony Trinitron KV-PG21 Analogue TV. The TV only has yellow and black input/output connections on the rear of the set, and I was unable to receive any signal from the STB via this connection. Instead, I was able to display good picture using the coaxial cable connections. Out from the STB and in on the TV. The picture was now good on ABC1 which I had problems receiving, and excellent on SBS, and crystal clear and much improved on Seven, Nine and Ten.
I was however unable to display a dialogue box on my TV screen after selecting menu. As a result I have been unable to find any of the free to air Digital services advertised including ABC2. I have tried scanning through both the VHF and UHF bands of both my TV and VCR to no avail.

I need to correct the information you've given me. The Digital set top box is a Celestial DVB8800HD... not a Zenith HDSAT520 DirecTV DTV Receiver Problem as in your reply. I was only able to receive picture on my TV screen after connecting the Coaxial Cable from the exterior Antenna to the RF in connection on the set top receiver, and running a second Coaxial cable from the RF out to the RF in of the Sony Trinitron KV-PG21 Analogue TV . Apart from the RF in connection, the TV only has yellow and black picture/sound plug connections. Running the component plugs from the set top to these didn't work. With the coaxial connection the picture is better than before but can't pick up any DIGITAL TV, and unable to bring up a DIALOGUE BOX on the TV screen via menu function on the remote.

SOURCE: How can I take advantage of digital cable?

No digital sound comes from Digital Coax or Optical and in order to utilize a digital signal u need HDMI or Component although component wont be truly digital. Try running everything to the TV then the sound out of the TV into the sound system. If its a high def source like high def cable box then use the optical conection on the back of the aquos and plug than into your surround system. if ur system doesnt support Optical or digital coax then you need an updated surround system. If i misunderstood your question im sorry. If u live in CT though stop by Circuit city in North haven. either myself, Dave, or my associate Justin should be able to help you out. and dont worry we're not on commission or anything.

SOURCE: VCR tuner cannot tune in my cable channels

It is working as designed. The purpose of your cable box is to take in a wire containing all of the possible channels you might watch, and then extract *one* channel, and force it to appear as channel 3. If you connect the cable directly to the VCR, then the VCR's "tuner" (ie, channel selector) has an opportunity to extract any channel it wants. But... as you point out, your VCR won't be able to "see" any of the digital channels. So... if your goal is to be able to watch any of the digital channels, the signal must pass through your cable box, which will put the selected channel on channel 3. There is no value in going from the VCR to the cable box, since the VCR's tuner will have already filtered out all but one channel. It would be helpful to make a list of what your useage goals really are, since there are so many different ways to hook these things up. Are you interested in: - watching digital channels? - recording digital channels? - watching one channel while recording another? - using higher quality video signals (composite, s-video, component, etc) rather than RF (ie, channel 3) And so on. Keep in mind that you have *three* tuners: Your cable box, your VCR, and your TV. It sounds like only your cable box can tune in the digital channels. If your cable box puts out any non-RF signal, then the best choice would be to go: Coaxial Wire -> Cable Box -> Video Connection -> VCR -> Video Connection -> TV, with the VCR and the TV both set to "video". Then you would only use the cable box as a tuner, the VCR would only see the tuned channel (via video in), and the TV would see the same channel (or whatever tape you are playing) on its video input.

SOURCE: Need help with PIP

When you go into the menu to choose the PIP source the PIP comes on to confirm that a valid source has been selected. It is normal for the PIP to close when the menu is exited. To display the PIP normally you will need a remote with a PIP button. Most universal remotes today have PIP functions but if you get a Zenith original replacement then you are guaranteed to enjoy the other PIP features such as size, position, freeze and swap.

If there is no audio as well then this suggest that the digital box is at fault. The fact that you can watch DVD's proves this fact. Unplug the digital box for 2 minutes and then re-try. Good luck.
