It seems as thought he compressor wont kick on - it is cool inside, but everything is melted. I did not notice and frost on the back or water coming from underneath - Is the compressor bad or could it be a switch?

your food should not thaw in a frost free freezer. but I can not tell you why it is thawing, sorry.
SOURCE: Freezer Compressor Motor turns on and right back off
please check the following list,
1) check wheather the service wire is in good condition or not.
2) thermostart might have been off.
3) turn the refrigerator backword and see if is there any wire is disconnected/cut.
4) try changing the plug of the refrigerator.
if your problem is not fixed than please contact the service engineer. i'm sure that your stater had been blown.................. have a nice day:-)

if it seems like the evaporator is getting cold then your sealed system should appear to be ok. you need the evap fan to transfer cold air into fresh food section. if not turning u need to replace fan motor. make sure your not getting to much frost build up on the evap.

freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit
Testimonial: "Thanks so much for your advice. Freezer seems to be working after being thoroughly thawed. Fingers are crossed."
SOURCE: freezer started emitting a chemical smell and food is thawing.
if its a sweet sickly smell then its possibly just a relay thats burnt out, should be cheap enough to replace, its the call out thats the killer.
