Question about Gateway 4540GZ Notebook
I have a Gateway laptop computer with 4 USB ports. Last week, all four ports stopped working. Using Device Manager, I uninstalled the host controllers and root hubs, turned off the computer, unplugged it and took out the battery, then restarted. Initially, all 4 ports worked, but within about 30 minutes of use two stopped working properly. Now 2 of the 4 ports work properly, and the other 2 do not. The two non-working ports provide power (I can charge an iPod), but they do not recognize the device - a "hardware not recognized" box appears on the taskbar and Device Manager shows an "Unknown Device" under the USB Controllers list - even though I can use the device on one of the two working ports.
This computer is about 3-1/2 years old. Any other advice, or does this sound like a motherboard problem?
Most likely a motherboard problem, though you can try and re-do windows, best bet on getting it all to work is Turn off CPU, Unplug Power cable, And all usb devices, let it sit for about 20mins. Plug it all back in. Turn on the CPU! Though this might really get on your nerves having to do this multiple times, id get a new motherboard.
