I found the problem. It was the Zone Alarm firewall. They have a fix for it now. All better here. Thanks anyway!

I have an old laptop that has a linksys wireless-b notebook adapter and my new computer with a linksys router attached is a linksys dual-band wireless-n. I can not get the notebook to link to the router...

Most of the newer routers use a newer type of encryption (WPA or WPA2) which is not supported by older 802.11b hardware.

Either set the Linksys router to use WEP encryption, or get a newer 802.11g card for the old laptop which can use WPA or WPA2 encryption.

Older versions of Windows XP also need to be upgraded to Service Pack 3 or apply this patch:

How do i reconfigure my linksys wireles-g wer54g ver. 6 router

Are you trying to set up the router.
You can do it manually without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem
then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

Wrt54g2 wireless doesn't get past the acquiring network address point.I'm using wpa2 with aes - wireless configuration is manual.

Unfortunately you did not give more information, so I 'm taking a wild guess here. If this solution does not solve you problem, let me know.

If you are running Windows XP SP1 or SP2, update the operating system to XP Service Pack 3 for best WPA/WPA2 support.

XP Service Pack 1 computers do not support WPA by default and cannot support WPA2. To upgrade an XP SP1 computer to support WPA (but not WPA2), either
  • install the "Windows XP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access" (link) from Microsoft, or
  • upgrade the computer to XP SP2
XP Service Pack 2 computers by default support WPA but not WPA2.

To upgrade an XP SP2 computer to also support WPA2, install the "Wireless Client Update for Windows XP SP2" (link) from Microsoft.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Cannot get on the internet

Hi

The problem was in the wep key. I entered the old wep key, not recalling that we had to trade our router in for a new one last summer. When I entered the new wep key we were able to get online.

thanks again
