Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

5 Answers

The printer is offline.

This is the message I get when I try printing to the device through Windows Vista. It was previously working fine. What is now happening is when the printer is powered up and it goes through its self check startup procedure there is an audible clicking sound heard and the InUse/Memory light is blinking green. This has not happened before.

I have the same problem; control panel indicates printer is offline, there is an audible clicking (like a soft turn signal) and the In Use/Memory light is blinking. Copier function works. Cable to CPU is connected. Have turned it off & on a few times. Worked yesterday on our XP system just fine........

Changed cable, turned unit off and on several times. Problem always re-occurs every time USB cable is attached to unit.

About every other time I start up (boot up) my computer and try to print, I get the message that the printer is offline. Nothing has changed! This happens with word processors, spreadsheets, and databases.
Reboot the computer, changing nothing, and it often works.
This is getting very tiring and my frustrations with Canon software are getting to be as great as with HP.

Remove the usb cable from the telephone jack on the back of the printer, and plug it in the usb port.

Same for me. had loud clicking sound, and blinking inuse/memory light. i had plugged usb port into telephone port. had trouble finding usb port. found it, plugged in. all the difference in the world..... of course.

Posted on Apr 08, 2008

That was correct. I had my USB Cable plugged into the phone port. The USB Port is ALL THE WAY to left on the back of the printer. It's kind of hidden because the printer sinks in on the side. Thanks so much, HAPPY PRINTING........YEAH !!!!!!

Dear drdar, Does your printer works fine in another OS? if not yet try, please try. If there is no problem in another OS....then.... Did you used the correct vista driver for your printer, if not ask the manufacturer for your printer driver which is compatible with Windows Vista.

Why does my Brother printer goes into Sleep mode and I can't print??

I have copied in the illustrated instructions for resolving printer status is Offline or Paused. (For Windows®) but if distorted please view here.

To solve the problem, please see the following:

  • If the printer status is Offline:

Check that the printer is online using the following steps:

    1. If the LCD screen is blank, then the Brother machine is not powerd on the machine to see if it wakes from sleep mode. If it does not, then verify that it is plugged into a working outlet and any power switches are turned to the ON position.
    2. Check the LCD screen for any error messages. An example would be "Paper Jam" or Ink/Toner Empty". If the LCD screen shows an error troubleshoot to clear the isssue indicated.

NOTE : These steps or screens may differ depending on the operating system.
    1. For Windows® XP Users:
Click Start => Printers and Faxes

      For Windows Vista® Users:
Click Start => Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Printers

Use Printer Offline: Error Processing Command

Go to system settings and select the 'Printer' option.

Right-click on the printer and enable the 'Use Printer Online' function.

Cancel all the printing jobs till that moment and redo the process.

Sometimes the 'Printer Offline' message occurs due to a 'Job Stuck' issue.

Check all network connections and functions.

Be sure the network interfaces work properly.

Turn the printer off and on to see whether the device is working properly.

When I try to print I get a message saying the printer is offline.

You've got a couple different options depending on what operating system you have.
Click here for Windows Vista. The Vista link is different. I don't see a specific solution for Vista. The information in the link will help for some things that cause the 'printer offline' message.

Windows says printer offline, but it is not offline. network settings confirmed. windows firewall turned off. scanner works perfectly over network, but printer is "offline"

The printer offline error mostly troubles windows 7/8/10 users, The printers loses connectivity even when it is connected and operating. The status message displays offline on the computer, and the printer does not print. An Offline status indicates that the computer has failed to communicate with the printer. In some network conditions, the printer might get offline unexpectedly.

Before going to the solution for this you must know when and why printer offline error takes place:
The error may appear when Windows 8 diagnoses that the printer is unavailable, but unfortunately, most times it fails to tell whether the printer is really offline or if it has connectivity problems or printing errors. Reasons why your printer appears to be offline, include problems with hardware, such as disconnected cables or malfunctioning equipment, and problems with software, such as corrupted or incompatible driver files.
These might occur when:
1. The connection between the computer and the printer is slow/unresponsive.
2. The printer has encountered an internal error
3. There are multiple unfinished print jobs in the queue.
There are some simple steps you can follow before going to any complicated way:
Your printer offline can be a problem with the driver software. This is a small piece of code that Windows and the printers use to "talk" to each other. If the driver software is outdated, corrupted or incompatible with the version of Windows that you have installed, you may need to update it.
Restart the printer and the computer or unplug its USB cable.
Do check that the printer's power cable is plugged into an electrical outlet. If the printer is connected to a power strip, make sure the strip itself is connected to the electricity supply and is turned on.
In case you are using a network printer both wired or wireless, You restart the router as it may cause due to network failure.
Different manufacturers come with their own diagnostics software which can inform the user about the problems coming up (Ex : HP's Print and Scan Doctor), Use it as it will be really useful.
Type in Services in your windows searches and hit the enter key. Click on Services option from the set of search results as shown below.
A new window for Services opens up. Scroll down and find the entry named Print Spooler.
Now right-click on Print Spooler entry and then on Properties option.
Set Startup type as Automatic from the drop-down menu.
As next, hit the Start button and wait till windows start the Print Spooler. Once done, hit Apply button.
Now if you look at the status of the Print Spooler, you can see that it is Started.
Solution 2 :
If the above method doesn't work for you, you can always try our second method. For that, type in Devices to the windows search and choose Devices and Printers from the search results.
Now find the printer that is offline and right click on it. Click on the option See what's printing from the context menu that appears.
A new window opens. Now click on the Printer tab and uncheck the option that says Use Printer Offline.
