There can be alot of reason the program is nt working, more details would help. go here, this can directly solve your prob, you can also download a copy of the prog cleanmgr.exe and replace with the original one in windows directory.(cleanmgr.exe is the actual prog which does disk cleanup) http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/cleanmgr/

How to perform a Disk Cleanup.

Disk cleanup
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up disk space by searching your disk for unwanted files and temporary files that you can safely delete without problems. It can remove all of the following:

Files in the Recycle Bin.
Temporary Internet files.
Temporary Windows files located in the Temporary files folder.
Optional Windows components that you are not using.
Installed programs that you no longer use or wish to use.

To launch the Disk Cleanup tool via Start menu go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

slasher_x_22.gif

A dialogue window should now appear enabling you to select the drive you want to clean up. Select the required drive and click OK.
slasher_x_23.gif

The specified drive will be examined and the amount of space you can potentially free up is calculated and displayed.
slasher_x_24.gif

The results, showing the amount of space that can be recovered by deleting files a secific type of file that is not needed is then displayed on the Disk Cleanup tab as shown below.
slasher_x_25.gif

Select the files and click Ok to remove these un-needed files.

Now that a Disk Cleanup has been performed your hard drive should perform slightly faster and have less clutter lying around.

I suggest you perform the disk cleanup tool every once in a while to ensure that your hard drive has a greater lifespan, never has any need to crash or come up with errors caused by unnecessary files, greater performance and increased productivity especially where it is needed most, in the workplace.

Tip

Maintain Your Hard Drive.

Your hard disk drive is one of the most important parts of your PC. It's where all your system files, applications and user data is kept. Most people understand the issue of security, the importance of making regular backups of your user data as an insurance policy against hard drive crashes. Few people realise and appreciate the importance of having regular hard disk maintenance which is designed to keep it in good working order.

The ultimate way to revitalise and cleanse your PC is to wipe the hard drive, start from scratch and then reinstall the operating system. However, there is much you can do to avoid such a situation arising, simply by using utilities provided within the bundle of your Windows operating system.

Disk cleanup
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space by searching your disk for unwanted files that you can safely delete. It can remove all of the following:

Temporary Internet files.
Files in the Recycle Bin.
Temporary Windows files located in the Temporary files folder.
Optional Windows components that you are not using.
Installed programs that you no longer use.

To launch Disk Cleanup via Start menu go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
slasher_x_4.gif

A dialogue window should now appear enabling you to select the drive you want to clean up. Select the required drive and click OK.
slasher_x_5.gif
The specified drive will be exampined and the amount of space you can potentially free up is calculated.
slasher_x_6.gif
The results, showing the amount of space that can be recovered by deleting files that are not needed are then displayed on the Disk Cleanup tab.
slasher_x_7.gif

Error Checking
Chkdsk.exe is a utility which verifies the logical integrity of a file system. In the event of the utility encountering logical inconsistencies in file system data, it will perform the necessary actions to repair the file system data. The same utility in earlier versions of Windows was called to as ScanDisk.

To Launch Chkdsk go to My Computer and right-click the hard disk you want to have checked. Then click Properties and select the Tools tab.
slasher_x_8.gif
Click on Check Now.

A dialogue box showing the Check disk options is displayed.
slasher_x_9.gif
Select the appropriate options and click Start.

You may get the following message.
slasher_x_10.gif
If so click Yes and your computer will reboot and then perform the scan.

Disk Defragmentation
Since files are constantly being written, deleted and over written to the hard drive, files are likely to become fragmented and scattered all over the drive. The disk defragment tool takes these files and puts them in order by eliminating spaces between files.

To start the disk defragment tool go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
slasher_x_12.gif
Then select the Tools tab and click Defragment Now.
slasher_x_8.gif
It should now display the hard drives showing total capacity as well as the free space of the drive(s).
slasher_x_13.gif
Now select the drive you want to defragment and click Analyse.
slasher_x_14.gif
The drive is scanned and a visual representation of how it is currently fragmented is displayed.

Depending on the the results of the analysis, you will be advised as to whether or not the volume should be defragmented.
slasher_x_15.gif
Even if it's not necessary, you can choose to Defragment anyway if you like.

The time it takes to defragment the hard drive is dependent on the size of the drive, how the fragmentation lies and how much free space it has.

As the drive defrags you can see how it is neatly repacking the files by looking at the bottem visual bar.
slasher_x_16.gif
Once it is complete you will get the following message
slasher_x_17.gif
You can choose to view the report which will show hard drive information such as free space, used space, cluster size and the free space as a percentage. Or you can just lick Close as the defragmentation is now complete.

Doing these checks frequently will prolong the lifespan of your hard drive and make sure it's running at maximum speed.

How to speed up your computer's performance?

Information: There are some few guidelines that you can follow to maintain your computer and keep it running smoothly.

Free Up Disk Space
By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Use Disk Cleanup to:

• Remove temporary Internet files.
• Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).
• Empty the Recycle Bin.
• Remove Windows temporary files.
• Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.
• Remove installed programs that you no longer use.
Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.
To use Disk Cleanup

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.
Disk Cleanup calculates the amount of space you will be able to free.
2. In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list.
Choose the files that you want to delete.
3. Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete, and then click OK.
4. When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.
After a few minutes, the process completes and the Disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer cleaner and performing better.
Speed Up Access to Data
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.
Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.
Run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals, optimally monthly, certain events warrant running the utility outside of the monthly rule of thumb.
You should run Disk Defragmenter under the following circumstances:
• You add a large number of files.
• Your free disk space nears 15 percent.
• You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

To use Disk Defragmenter:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Click Analyze to start the Disk Defragmenter.
2. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button.
After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.
Tip: You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.
3. To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button.
After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.
4. To display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.
5. To close the View Report dialog box, click Close.
6. To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.
Detect and Repair Disk Errors
In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
If you use your computer daily, you should try to run this utility weekly to help prevent data loss.
To run the Error Checking utility:
Important: Be sure to close all files before running the Error-Checking utility.
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.
3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
4. Click the Check Now button.
5. In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
In most circumstances, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
6. If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.
Tip: Only select the Automatically fix file system errors check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.

How to perform enhanced Disk Cleanup on your Windows Operating System

The Windows Operating System tends to collect alot of junk files, programs, and temporary files that you don't need. After a while, these files can fill up your hard drive and slow your computer down.

Anyone can perform the standard Disk Cleanup by right clicking on their hard drive, selecting Properties, and then click the Disk Cleanup button, but who wants to be like everyone else?

To perform a more extensive Disk Cleanup on your Windows Operating System, and to look good in front of your friends, perform the following steps:

Step 1. Click Start and select Run.

Step 2. Type the following in the space provided:

Cleanmgr /sageset:1

Hit the Enter key

Step 3. The Disk Cleanup window will appear. Select all the options, then hit Apply and OK. The window will disappear, but what did you just do?

Well it is relatively simple. The cleanmgr.exe file controls the Disk Cleanup function. The /sageset argument is allowing you to set the options (the selections you made) and the :1 is the value or code you have assigned for the options of Disk Cleanup. But how do we get Disk Cleanup to run using the options we just saved? See Step 4.

Step 4. Click Start and select Run.

Step 5. In the space provided, type:

cleanmgr /sagerun:1

Hit Enter

Step 6. You guessed it. The /sagerun argument is telling cleanmgr.exe to execute value 1.

Step 7. The Disk Cleanup window will appear and begin to automatically perform a cleanup, using the settings you saved, represented by value 1.

Step 8. Do this a few times a week and your computer will stay relatively clean.

Stay tuned for the next Tip as we will setup a scheduled task using this command.

A hard drive is usually partitoned, one hard drive will show up as two. The recovery drive should not be messed with. Don't add files , nor delete files from that drive.

Freeing up extra hard drive space

Are you out of hard drive space but can't find anything you'd like to remove from your computer?

Maybe you should try doing a Disk Cleanup.
Disk Cleanup will remove unnecessary files from your hard drive and if it hasn't been done on your system previously, free up a lot of space in the process.

To do a Disk Cleanup:

1) Go to My Computer.
2) Right click on your C drive.
3) Click Properties.
4) Click the "Disk Cleanup" button next to the visual representation of your hard drive space.
Disk Cleanup will calculate how much space you can free up and
what should be removed.
5) Under "Files to delete" select any files you don't want or need.
Generally all of the tabs can be selected and none of the files are
needed by your system. Below on "Description" you can view what
the files listed under each tab are for.
6) Once you have selected all of the files you want to remove click OK.
7) Disk Cleanup will remove the files from your system.
Disk Cleanup is complete.
