Sounds like you have virus problems --

it will take some doing to clean it up and get it going again but i will walk you though it.

first i need to know--
are you running xp or vista?
what antivirus software have you been using and is it up to date and functioning?
when you say you cant restart without the disk, have you tried booting to safemode from your bios?
what kind of connection are you using, cable, dsl?
can you browse the internet when you plug directly to your modem?

please let me know

ok well first when you restart the computer does it go to the logon screen and let you in

are you running xp or vista?

  • Brian Ebeling Dec 26, 2008

ok. from your desktop go to---
Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager
Do you see any yellow signs with exclamation points in them?
If so what are the labels they are next to?

If not Click on the Network Adapters Header and tell me what the labels are under that heading.
also click on the labels one at a time and make sure Device Status Window it says Working Properly and under device usage it says Use this Device (enable)
if yes in both then exit out of device manager and give me the info i requested.

well that means you have several problems with your drivers, which is why you have no sound. you are gonna have to download all your drivers and install them. you will have to connect to your modem directly with an ethernet cable. wont take to long to download and install. but you WILL have to check for viruses and malware when your done. i can walk you through that

In the device manager, under Network Adapters do all the entries have exclamation marks next to them? wondering about the LAN adapter, so we can get you online to download your drivers

  • Brian Ebeling Dec 26, 2008

ok good that means you should be able to connect directly to your modem. just plug an ethernet cable between your laptop and the modem and windows should automatically recognize the connection down in the tray. open your browser and see if you can go to GOOGLE.COM

    if not go to --
Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection and tell me what you see.

  • Brian Ebeling Dec 26, 2008

you have an XP install disk? if so do you have the product key for it?

  • Brian Ebeling Dec 26, 2008

well you apparently have a lot of problems so i would like to use the **** to repair your system but you need the key.

or if you can get a cable to hook up directly to your modem we can fix it with downloads.

or if you can give me the make, model etc of your laptop. i can give you the link to download a driver for the wireless adapter and you can maybe download it from someone elses computer and install it to yours.

  • Brian Ebeling Dec 26, 2008

ok, go here to this link and download a little program that will identify what network adapter you have so we can get you there correct driver---

This link can be a little slow but it should start the download automatically, if it doesn't start click on the little button at the top. DO NOT push the big download button under "RECCOMENDED DOWNLOAD" in the center of the screen.

when it down loads you need to UNZIP the contents into a folder on your desktop

when that's done click on the aida32.exe file, it might take a minute to open. it is scanning your system.
when it opens, click on NETWORK and then WINDOWS NETWORK.
at the top of the screen there should be two adapters listed, one for LAN and one for Wireless.
Click on the Wireless adapter and tell me it's name.
Towards the bottom of the screen, if you scroll down, there may be an internet address, please tell me that as well.

***The AIDA32 Program is fairly small so it is easy to transfer from one computer to another if you have a usb drive or key or you can burn it to a CD and transfer it that way.

really need to get your computer hooked up to your modem though.

    let me know :)

I recently got my Toshiba Satellite A500-025 laptop home from being repaired by Toshiba ( a screen fix), and when I turned it on, the wireless switch would not work and the hot key (Fn+F8) did not work...

I would call Toshiba about it. I think they may have left the antenna wires off of the wireless card. Of course, you can disassemble it yourself and see if that is the case, but if it's under warranty, it's on them!

i would go out to Toshiba's web site and download new drivers for it. then i would go into device manager and uninstall the driver for it. after that is done then you install the new driver for the wireless card and hope that it works. it that doesn't than you might have a hardware malfunction or software conflict.

My toshiba laptop speakers (I think)

First thing to do plug in a headset if you have one and check to see if sound comes out . If you have sound then the problem is the driver for the audio. Try uninstalling and reinstall the drivers in device manager. If that doesnt work. Use the Toshiba device driver cd and completely uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers.
