BEFORE you connect the Garmin to your computer you must download the free Garmin program on your computer called UPDATER. Did you do that?

If not:

This is the current solution posted by HP. Sounds like your firmware is corrupt and these are the steps you need to take. This may or may not work.

  1. Close the firmware update tool on the computer if it is still active on the screen, and then turn off the product.

  2. If the product is on a network, connect a USB cable (2 meters or less) from the product to an open port on the computer. HP recommends that this be a direct connection instead of through a hub.

  3. Turn on the product, and then wait for the message ready 2 Download to appear.

  4. On the computer, cancel any alerts about a new device being connected.

  5. On the computer, open the Printers and Faxes control panel.

  6. Right-click the printer driver for the product model that is being updated, and then click Properties .

  7. In the Properties dialog box, click the Ports tab.

  8. Note the name of the port that the product is currently connected to for use later when reconnecting at the end of this process.

  9. Click the check box next to USB001 . If USB001 is already connected to another USB device, click USBXXX where "XXX" is the highest-numbered USB device that has a description of Virtual printer port for USB . Using the scroll bars on the right side of the window might be necessary, depending on the number of devices installed.

  10. Click OK to accept the change and apply the settings.

  11. Restart the firmware update tool on the computer, and then select the same product that was just created.

  12. Start the firmware download.

  13. Verify that the control panel display shows Erasing and then Programming , indicating that the update process has begun. Do not interrupt the firmware update process.

  14. The product should momentarily show the message Complete . Turn the product off and then back on. The product will not automatically reboot.

  15. When the product reboots, on the computer, cancel any alerts about a new device being connected.

  16. Print a configuration page to verify that the update occurred.

  17. Return to the Printers and Faxes dialog box, right-click the printer driver for the product model that is being updated, and then click Properties .

  18. In the Properties dialog box, click the Ports tab.

  19. Click the check box next to the previous port to which the product was connected before the update began.

  20. Click OK to accept the change and apply the settings.

  21. If the product was previously connected via USB, the process is complete. If the product was network-connected, disconnect the USB cable, and then reconnect the product to the network cable.

Try it with another USB cable, it's more likely that the cable is bad than the Controller. If you don't have any success with the new cable, the controller probably has a malfunction and you will have to take it to the service to repair it.

Once you Register your unit, Garmin will give you the lastest updates and firmware.

To register your gps ....

with the unit Off...... Using the USB cable connect your gps to your computer ( is the same usb cord you would use connecting a camera to a computer)

your computer will detect the new hardware ( USB ) a box will pop up you can minimise it

now go to

it will also detect your unit and let you download WebUpDater utility to transfer files to your garmin and unlock maps

******** Where you do this will be called your SECURITY LOCATION ****** if you lock your unit with a Pin Number and forget the Pin you would have to return to the Security Location for it to automatically unlock

The pages print off and are fine on one side but on the other side it's a double copy - as if it's printing over itself.

Try this:
Please close all applications before running the Repair MFL-Pro Suite.
1. Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected an interface cable.
2. Turn on your computer. (For Windows 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)
*Note: On Windows 2000 and XP systems, you can check to see whether youhave administrator rights by right-clicking on the "Start" button. If you see the text "Explore All Users", you have administrator rights. If you do not see this text, you do not have administrator rights. Try to log on to the computer using a different user name, or computer manufacture for support; if your computer belong to a network You will need to contact your network administrator to give you permission to install the software
3. Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows into your CD-ROM drive. If thelanguage screen appears, select your language. If you are not promptedwith the language screen, go to My computer, then double click on the MFL_Pro icon.
4. The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click on REPAIR MFL-PRO SUITE.
5. Click YES, when prompt the software to turn off machine and disconnect parallel/usb connection.
6. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click YES if you agree to its terms.
7. Select LOCAL CONNECTION, and then click NEXT. The installation will continue.
7a. For some models, you will be prompt to select USB or Parallel connection following step 7. Please select the cable connection you areusing, then click next.
8. When prompted to #Connect the Machine#, connect the USB or Parallel cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub. For Parallel connection, please use cable 6 feet or shorter. Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer.)
9. Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. It will take a few seconds for the installation screen to appear. The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The Found new hardware wizard windows will appear one after another. Please DO NOT try to cancel or click on any options for the Found New Hardware Wizard. Just wait and the installation program will make the necessary selection for you.
10. When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, click Brother Registration to register your device with Brother. You can also click onScanSoft Registration to register the ScanSoft Paperport software. If you have previously registered with Brother or Scansoft, click Next.
11. Click FINISH to restart your computer.
The MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Printer driver and Scanner driver have been reinstalled and the installation is now complete.

Update problem with Garmin Nuvi 255w

I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into. They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.

Register/Download Problem

This may be a problem with the Garmin web servers, as I actually had trouble updating the software in mine, saying it coulod not connect to the Garmin Update servers. But that was a week or two ago and I'd have expected that fixed by now. However, it's possible that's a problem too. However, a more probable one, is what I have to say below.
I'm wondering if its more a problem with the computer or cable, since the Garmin should be charging while connected to the PC and if its saying power is disconnected and it shuts down, then maybe it's a problem with the USB port on your computer, or possibly the cable though unlikely. Make sure you're using the official Garmin USB cable the unit came with. Also make sure you are using the right drivers for your USB high-speed ports.
