A Blinking Amber or Yellow power button means that the power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

if you do not have time to correct your spelling - go be a artist or mime. Accuracy counts in everything - especially computer problem solving.

buying a new one / or bought a new one, is NOT a valuable solution to anyone.

I cannot detect any problem with the computer other than the power lights continues to blink amber and white. Help.

If the power light is blinking Amber or Yellow, your power supply is no good. You can purchase a new power supply either online at places like http://www.tigerdirect.com or you can take your whole computer into a store like bestbuy and ask them to show you power supplies that will work with your computer.

If you are unsure on how to replace your power supply, I would suggest taking it to someone that will install it properly.

There are also a lot of videos out there like this one:

http://video.about.com/pcsupport/powersupply.htm

That show you how to do it yourself. Just make sure all the power connections are connected or you might have devices that dont' work properly.

Have a great day.

Dell Dimension 8300 power light flashes amber. Watched a move on it last night from an external hard drive, after which i shut down the computer eg start, turn off comp, turn off. It carried on installing...

Hi damos_turbo,

I wish I better news for you, but your going to be going into PC hell. What the amber light is telling you is that something on inside the case is bad. It could be the CPU, or the motherboard, or the PSU.
I would give you my normal advice with dealing with MO's but with the Dell 8300, it has a life of it's own.

Determining was is broken is like detective work. What I do, is take everything off the board to start. Then add the minimum to start a board to see if it will start. That's one drive (cd or otherwise) the CPU, and one bank of memory. (that's not a required eliminate, but it helps avoid beep codes) Also, if your going to load a ide drive, make sure you set your pin setting correctly on it. Now, you should get the power supply on, and the cpu. If those don't power up, it's then either one of the five elements. The CPU, Power supply, Ram, Drive, or the motherboard. The next step is to replace each one of the first four to see if you get any change. If no change, then I usually get another board that I can test the first four, and make sure that they work. After that, then I say you have a dead Board. As I said in the beginning, PC hell is here.

I sometimes just advise people to get a new computer, If you like dell's they have new ones for $300.00 to not only match what you have, but will have a whole lot more speed.

Good Luck and don't forget to leave a rating.
Thanks
Mark

Dell Inspiron flashing amber power light, not charging

I would think the batteries need replacing. That happened to my Dell Latitude CPI. The batteries won't charge past about 3%, so I got new ones and that did the trick. If this is under a year old I would contact Dell about it, if it is under a year old they should replace the batteries.

Hope this helps.

Dell Dimension 8400 power supply

Hi,
It not a common problem. The problem that you are facing is is beacuse of faulty motherboard. The blinking amber is caused , becasue the motherboard is not able to distribute the power signal to the devices . You can follow the link below to trouleshoot the problem if you are comfortable in opening the computer chassis

Dell Dimension power problem

There are several different solutions for this as posted at this Forum.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/51352-2-dell-dimension-8400-wont-boot

1) A lot of people have just removed the Jumper for the CMOS and turned the Power back on and back off and replaced the jumper and/or removed the battery.

2) Several people have reseated the Memory and after booting back up it worked.

3) A few had to replace the Mother Board and CPU but in this instance they had to also replace the Case because the Dell case wasn't really fit for the heat of from the CPU.

4) I had the exact same problem and luckily replacing the Power Supply fixed this for me. I had to cut out the back of the Dell case for the toggle on/off switch but when I tested the old Power Supply it was only getting 5amps and this was causing the Amber/Orange/Yellow light to constantly flash.

I hope this helps!

Computer Won't Power Up

If the blinking amber LED is on the computer itself and not the monitor, this is most likely a power supply issue. First thing to try would be replace the power supply. If the blinking led is on the monitor, it probably has bad capacitors and needs to be replaced. (or repaired)

Loud fan and wont turn on

power supply is probably shot and you are feeding a voltage way over what is needed. I have a dell that refused to operate one day. I went to www dot affordablesurplus dot com and found a 350 watt power supply with all the RIGHT plugs. Never had a problem since.
