The car acts like it is shifting from drive to neutral while traveling. The ignition key will also get stuck at times.

SOURCE: Gear shift is locked. we can only shift the car
The automatic transmissions on these vehicles are known to die early in
the life of the car and Volvo is well aware that the vehicle has a dud
auto transmission. The symptoms you have mentioned are an indication
that the transmission has had it. It's basically just running in limp
mode now.
You don't say what mileage this vehicle has clocked up but even low mileage vehicles have had to
have the entire transmission replaced due to failures like yours. You
also, no doubt, have a transmission alert showing on the dash.
The
bad news is that a replacement automatic transmission will now be necessary
and this will be costly. Even then, with these cars, you could experience another
transmission failure after just another 30000 miles or so of driving.

have a look at the button by the shifter, the lock override button, if it is jamed down you get this!

My car had the same problem. Turns out the gear shift was not correctly going into Park. My mechanic adjusted the gear shift and now it's fine.
SOURCE: 2005 XC90 shifter is locked - can only shift
check the button that you push in on your shifter. will the shift button not go all the way back into the shifter like normal. can you pull it out toward the dash? be easy when doing so to keep from breaking it. something has broken inside the shifter and allows the button to come out too far. try sticking ur finger in the shifter behind the button and realign the button. the button should go all the way into the shifter when it is aligned. it's only a temporary fix but will get you home.
