Generic problem for all Vacuums
The shaft on the motor
Posted by tsnater on Jun 10, 2008
The shaft on the motor for rotating the brush is not moving. It is a Kenmore Whispertone 12 V Model 116 3521290.
I am suspicious of the Belt Protection system.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me that you have a motor that is froze up and would be in need of some type of service, whether it be the fan(s) on the end of the motor, the carbon brushes are sticking and bound up, or the armature would be the last thing. Just be careful that the repair cost and labor do not exceed the cost of a new motor. The motor shaft should @ all times should spin freely. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

SOURCE: Kenmore 3.9 with power-mate Model 116 2839581.

You have to take off the top of the power nozzel that has the light lense. There are two pressure locks, one on each side. Use a screw driver to release. You will see the screws.Take the two screws out and on some models, there are two pressure locks on the back of the nozzel. Again use the screw driver to release. The top should come right off.Hope this helps.

I inherited this vacuum from my mother but I don't have the manual. I have 2 belts for it, but I don't know where they go. I can turn it on and it seems to work, but the bag doesn't fill up...

Most vacuum uses one belt at a time. The belt connects the agitator (beater bar) to the roller which is driven by the motor of the vacuum in the base of the upright vacuum.

To check if the belt is present/intact on the vacuum, look at the sides of the base for two latches. Push the latches away from each other then lift up to remove the cover so that you can check or replace the belt. To replace the belt, lift the agitator out of the base (first lift the right side). Cut off the old belt with scissors if it is still intact before pulling on the agitator. You may need to pull the bumper forward to get the beater bar out of the base. To put on the new belt, slide it onto the roller of the motor then onto the pulley of the agitator. Replace the beater bar in the housing. Start with the left end cap and make sure to keep the arrow pointing down on both sides of the part. Make sure that the agitator turns and center the belt before reattaching the cover.

While you have cover off, check for anything wrapped around the agitator. Remove anything that prevents the beater bar from turning freely. Make sure the area around the agitator is clear of any clogs.

However, if the belt is missing, the volume of dirt picked up will be less but not zero. It is more likely that the unit is clogged. There are several filters that need regular cleaning or replacement. The motor filter is at the bottom of the vacuum bag cavity. It should be cleaned with warm soapy water then rinsed completely. Squeeze out the excess water and then let it air dry. Wait until it is dry before reassembling the vacuum.

An exhaust filter also needs regular cleaning. This is behind the dust cover near the bottom of the area covered by the cover. To remove the dust cover, pull forward and then lay it down. To clean, put the filter under cold running water. Then air dry completely before reassembling the vacuum cleaner.

Finally check if the hose is clogged. First remove the hose by grasping it near the base and twisting it as you pull it away from the vacuum. Pull the hose completely straight then plug in and turn on your vacuum. Stretch out the hose and then let it relax into its storage configuration. Turn off the vacuum and then unplug it. Check for and remove any clumps of dirt stuck in the hose before replacing the hose.

If you have cleaned the vacuum and it is still not picking up dirt, try a different pile height setting on the vacuum. Also check if the agitator should be replaced.

Manage My Life has the manual for the vacuum here: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/15123/KENMORE-Vacuum-Upright-L0807740?brand_name_search=33078 . This manual gives the pictures of the various parts that need to be cleaned or replaced regularly. Sears Parts Direct has some parts for the unit; see http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Vacuum-Parts/Model-72136078600/0582/0645000?sid=PDVertical .

I hope this helps.

Kenmore Model 116 Cannister Vacuum.Trying to get into motor area. Think belt is worn out. I have removed the front two screws under the hinged cover, but can not remove cover over motor.. Still attached at...

Under the cordwinder actuator button, are your other two screws. To remove this cover, take a flat tipped screwdriver and , very carefully, find the "tabs" (there are two) both on the front section under the button. Then, Carefully, press them in and back and up, in that order, one at atime, or both if you can. Your button should pop off, it can be a bit tricky, I know, it feels like it could break. But don't worry, they usually don't break. If you think that there is a problem with your belt, there is no reason to be accessing the motor compartment, for there is not a belt anywhere except the power nozzle, and if you press the circuit breaker/reset switch (while unit is running) located on the power nozzle, this will often solve problems with your belt. I hope i could help fixya! Let me know, thanks! Rene (the Vacuum Doctor)

Don´t know how to take my Rainbow apart.

Your model is a bit newer than mine, but on mine, I have to peel off the foam rubber gasket that seals the canister to the top of the vac when you put it together. You will have to replace this gasket once you peel it off. Under the gasket are the screws that hold the top cover on.
Hopefully your model is similar to mine, and this is the answer you need!

Not Sucking!

If you have the instruction manual check for how your vac breaks apart. It sounds like you may have to follow and break away all parts until you find the blockage. I am assuming you have full power in your motor .

Removing kenmore vacuum Canister motor cover model 116-27312790

What you need to do is take it apart and look for any carpet peices dug up in there preventing the motor to spin. Also go look for another filter for it and if you google it you can probably get instructions or if you still have the book.

I don't know how to take apart me Rainbow e2 series vac.

I recently took mine apart because the motor stopped working. Realized the brushes were pretty well worn down and one side was completely gone. I was looking on the internet for detailed instructions on how to take it apart. I ended up just ripping it apart with no problems but made a tutorial to help you guys out. Here's a link to it

http://www.vacuumcleanerforum.com/f20/21715-how-take-your-rainbow-vaccum-apart.html

This is for the e-series vaccum, not the e2 but they pretty much have the same design and same motor (e2 has a 2 stage motor).

Let me know if you have any questions

That cover is the called the fan cover and is usually pressed on. Tapping on the edge with a flat blade, you may be able to get it off and hope you don't bend it up, you will to put it back on tight enough so it will stay in place. Another thing to take apart and clean is the turbine, this is what will turn the brush block. Learning TV repair isn't easy, I used to do that for about 30 years along with microwave and other electronics.
