Question about Western Digital WDG1C2500N MyBook Premium 250GB External FireWire USB Harddrive Hard Drive

WD My Book 250G no longer recognized by 2 diff PCs, making noise

I took my My Book to my parents' house to "share" music with my father, left the drive hooked up with the computer on overnight, but didn't transfer any files. The next day his computer couldn't find the drive, and found the same problem here. When I plugged it in, the booting up noise sounded louder, and repeated multiple times - then noticed the side was dented (transported it in its original packaging, but I don't know if it got knocked over elsewhere). I really want the files stored on it (photos, music without copies elsewhere), so what should I do? Here's the options I've come up with so far...

1. I have tech-savvy friends who offered to take a look for free, but I don't know if this is a good idea (likelihood of losing stored files).

2. I called Disk Doctors and they said it sounds like a physical problem, which they'll try to fix for minimum $500 in their clean room.

Any advice beyond 1 and 2? Is Option 1 reasonable and safe to start with? Thanks in advance.

I tried what you suggested, but the drive didn't show up under the disk management, and I could only change the drive letter of the C: drive, which was not recommended. I tried refresh as well - no luck. Thanks for thinking of me and my poor broken drive.

This sounds like a similar case. A guy I use to work with had a WD he was in his truck heading home with it sitting on the seat beside him. He hit the brakes and the HD was thrown from the seat to the floor. He then tried to hook it up to see if it was broke and could not get it to work on any computer at work. It was a cubicle job so there were plenty of computers to work with on this. Somebody suggested to change the name of the drive. He then went to the help menu on his computer asked how to change the drive letter. Once he did that it worked fine. What happened was somehow the drive letter got changed to a letter that the computers used commonly so with a drive letter being the same the computer will not detect that there are two drives. Changing the letter to a different letter will allow the computer to recognize the drive which will enable the hard drive to function.

"the parameter is not correct" msg re WD My Book, unable to access

Try plugging it into a different computer to see what it does. Sometimes a computer's operating system will recognize an external drive differently if it has only a slight problem, whereas another computer's configuration may treat the problem differently. Some external hardrive software can get jumbled by the programs of a computer or sometimes even their own software programs can cause slight problems. It sounds like a software problem with bugs that can be ironed out. Also some computers will change the drive name to fit into the order of drives it recognizes. Good luck!

How do I use my WD hard drive to store files so I can free up space on my laptop hard drive?

That's an easy task:
1) Plug your Hd to your laptop and wait until the laptop recognize it as a new drive and assign a new letter to it. If you have a disc use it if your laptop ask for it.
2) Copy all files you want to transfer to the new HD and paste them on it.
That's it.

Why can't I use my hard drive anymore? All it's doing is constantly flashing. My comupter doesn't even auto search it anymore. the WD program doesn't show me any details for my hard drive. I was using it...

More than likely the hard drive has reached its capacity and will not accept any more data Therefore the hard drive is locked.
Also heat build up in the housing or PC will cause malfunction.
1. check the power supply it may have failed to supply power to the hard drive
2. the hard drive cable could be loose from the board
3.Go "my computer" and select the C drive and right click "properties" to see how much capacity is left. If you see all blue ( Windows XP) or all red ( Windows 7) then the hard drive is full and will not receive any more data.

My wd external hardrive is not recognized anymore on my pc. I have tried on other pcs and tried different usb cables and nothing. I do not want to reformat the drive because I have important information...

Hi. If you here some clicking noise then your external hard drive might be busted already.

Try to contact a local tech and see if he can still pull out your data from there.

Hope you'll be able to extract your files back.

Have a great weekend!!!

Only showing as a network device on 2 of the 3 pcs on the network

Did u added the new network devices, or did u wait till thy popped up?
If u didn't added them manually, then go to networklocations, add network location, press next, and again next, then type in \\mybookworld\"here the name of the folder of your mybook, ex. Movies or music,.." (without " ")

Do it for every folder.

Problem turning on hd

WD = Western Digital , 250Gigabyte external USB drive.

This is where you may need to perform all the USB checks and trouble shooting in the book + load any driver software that came with the drive.

also I would need to know what motherboard and what operating system you are using before I can help farther.

normaly windows 98 and 98 se did was just not able to make proper use of the USB ports , also on nforce2 motherboards service pack2 was required to enable the USB 2.0 feature
we are constantly lied to by the computer industry so get used to it untill the feds crack their skulls.

and remember if it's not hebrew , it's a lie :-> lhime shalom.

WD Hard drive no longer works

This is mostly a power issue, but if you use a hub it may be latency as well. Some USB ports limit power to 400-500ma per port, the Passport Essential needs a bit more than 1000ma and won't work at all with these computers. Other USB ports/hubs limit the total power available for all devices combined... this is why, in your case, you can use one drive, but not both.

FYI, higher speed devices also tend to need shorter cables due to latency. (Light & electricity travels about 1 foot, or 30 cm, in a billionth of a second; this limits the size of high speed devices. In layman's terms, latency is the Brontosaurus effect, since the head takes a while to talk to the tail.)

To boost power, Western Digital recommends using a 22" USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (WDCA029RNN) to combine the power of two USB ports into the one Passport Essential USB port--it is also a bit longer than the original 18 inch cable. For all EXCEPT the black Passport Essential drive, you may also the WD Passport™ Power Supply Adapter (WDPS021 for the US voltage version). See Western Digital knowledge base ID 1296 for more on this issue.

Hope this helps!

How do you set up multiple WD Anywhere users on the network to share the same MyBook World Edition

-No WD Anywhere allows 5 users I think.
This could only be the solution, if you installed WD Anywhere on other PCs before

Check out the MioNet site, think they give options for new users.
if this is not the problem, I don't have a solution by now.
