Question about Uniden BC340CRS Base Scanner

I have my codes programmed but I do not hear anyone talking

I have put all the codes for my area into the scanner but I cannot hear any of the police coversations. How would I find out if my small town of 3000 is a digital frequency? I read where only some of the big cities are digital. Does my bc340crs need something else added to it for it to work?

I was given a uniden police scanner and I need to know the frequencies and how to get the static out. . Thank you . Rhonda Hansen

First thing to try is to change the "squelch" setting. If you squelch is set wrong, you will hear static all the time and the scanner may not scan. Turn the squelch until you no longer hear the static and the scanner scans.

I have a uniden bc72xlt can i put in police frequideneny

Hi - this scanner will allow you to monitor any service (police, fire, EMS, Weather, Ham, FRS , GMRS, and lots more) that transmits an analog AM or FM signal in the 25-88Mhz, 108-174Mhz or 406-512Mhz range.

You will need to determine frequencies of the services of interest in your area and program them into the radio's memory. You can find frequencies in books sold online and places like Radio Shack. You will probably find a lot of frequencies by looking at Google results for them. Have a look at my link to the search results for "Boston, MA Scanner Frequencies" below:

You should try typing your city, town or county over "Boston MA" and click search to get a list of frequencies in your area. You may also want to check out the Scanner Master website for additional help if you like.

Good luck!

Chances are that your police communications have moved to a trunked radio system, while fire and EMS remain on a "standard" system for compatibility. For the latest information on active frequencies and systems in your area, visit www.RadioReference.com

The signal received on scanners depends on a number of factors. The most important is the elevation of your location. If you are in a valley or have higher ground around you, this will screen signals from you and will reduce the number of stations you can hear.

Secondly, receivers vary enormously from one to another. The one you are using may simply be less sensitive.

Thirdly, the position and type of antenna is crucial. If you are using a directional antenna it will only pick up signal from the front and some from the back. An omni-directional antenna will allow you to pick up signals through 360 degrees. The antenna must also be as high as you can get it, especially if you are in a valley.

Some emergency services use repeaters which allow you to hear signals much further away. You may not be in range of a police repeater.
