Question about Sony Handycam® HDR-SR5C HDD Camcorder

Open Question

Sony HandyCam HDR-SR5 HDD formant error

I haven't used my HandyCam in several months..I recharged the battery and though I was all set to film my kids opening Christmas presents. But when I turned the camera on to get ready to shoot, I got a message saying "HDD Format Error". I contacted Sony online support. They directed me to re-format the disk..didn't help. They said my only option was to send the HandyCam in for service (minimum charge $165) Do you have any other ideas?

The Sony waranty covered labor for 90 days, and parts for 1 yr. I purchased the HandyCam in May 08, so parts would be covered but not labor. I assume the $165 dollar that the Sony Repair Service charges as a flat fee was to cover labor. I don't have any experience in camera repair, but I'm game for trying if you've got some things I could try.

    Thanks

Think again, as opening camcorder by yourself will void parts warranty.
I can give you part number of HDD of HDR-SR5 and hopefully can locate part shop where you can purchase it. Now rest is your own skills that how you make it as I'm far away and can provide info only over internet.

If HDD format didn't work, it means HDD requires replacement.
Please check is it under warranty?
Let me know do you have experience of camera repair to guide you further?

SOURCE: Error Message: Disk cover open, accidentally. Turn on power again.

When you open the door you will see 2 metal tabs that are sensors to that are pushed by 2 plastic tabs on the door that push on the metal tabs to let the camera know the door is shut. For whatever reason these tabs are not pushed up enough and I triggered them by sticking something in there to make contact. I used the end of a toothpick for now. May be primative but it works for now and I may look for a method to make it permanant but at least my camera works now

SOURCE: After I formatted using windows

Hi,
You need to format camcorder hard drive through Format option in camcorder menu itself.
Please check camcorder menu and hard drive section for Format option, this will delete all files on hard drive and solve your problem.
Thanks.

SOURCE: HDD FORMAT ERROR FOR SONY HANDYCAM DCR-SR47

Somewhere in the menu there is a function 'clear' ('leegmaken' in dutch). I used it and the problem was solved!! Unfortunately I can't find it anymore. You should try it!
