Question about Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7802 Notebook

Open Question

Toshiba laptop w Vista crashes frequently

My Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7802 laptop with Vista Home Premium operating system purchased January 2008 ceases to function in the middle of off-line and on-line operations on average once per hour. Without warning the screen goes blank, except for the faint glow indicating that power is still on. The computer then responds to nothing. I can only turn it off by holding down the on/standby button until the screen goes black. Then I can turn it back on, and a message appears to the effect that the computer terminated abnormally.
The computer sits on a wood surface and should be venting properly, ruling out overheating, I believe. Best Buy's Geek Squad ran the computer for 48 hours (doing what, I don't know) without replicating the problem.

My Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7802 laptop with Vista Home Premium
operating system purchased February 2008 ceases to function in the
middle of off-line and on-line operations on average 2-3 times per day.
Without warning the screen goes blank, except for the faint glow of the screen's backlight. The computer then responds to
nothing. None of the keys on the keyboard will produce a response, not even Control-Alt-Delete. Also, the hard drive light registers no activity during any of these attempts to get the laptop to respond. I can only turn it off by holding down the power button
until the screen goes black. Then I can turn it back on, and a message
appears to the effect that the computer was not shut down properly and asks me if I want to boot up in Safe Mode.
Occasionally when the laptop crashes the screen is not totally black, it consists of alternating gray and black vertical lines. It remains unresponsive, however.

If you let the system, run while "computer responds to nothing" does it eventually begin to respond? Am I correct in asuming that Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing as well? Normally this combination of keys will let you call up Task Manager.

SOURCE: Geek Squad Backup Disks

Usually you just put the first backup disk in the CD/DVD drive and restart/reboot the computer.
If it does'nt boot up you have to go in to the bios settings and change the boot sequence so that it boots from the CD/DVD rom instead of the Hard Drive. When it's finished the restore task you can either leave the bios settings as they are, or change it back to boot from the Hard Drive. Sometimes the backup/restore disks will put the PC back to the same as the day you bought it, which means completely wiping the Hard Drive and reloading the Operating System (Windows) and any programs that where installed at the time the disks were made. If you can run the backup/recovery from within Windows there will be a program in the Programs list on the Start menu. That way you usually keep anything that you have added since you bought the PC and it just reinstalls the Operating System to restore it back to it's original condition.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: running high temps

Run a vacuum cleaner pipe around the vents, and key board, this should clear dust and fluff. Try and vacuum regularly and if it persists, you could get a cooler pad that it sits on with 2 or 3 fans to cool the base.

Take out the battery and leave out for about 30 sec - to 5 min this will reset some settings for you then I would change my power settings where it never sleeps this is a very common problem.

Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7802 w/ display driver stop working

What Operating System are you running? Is this OS the original OS that comes with the computer?

I would recommend running windows update and when given the option choose "Custom". This will present options otherwise unavailable, such as optional and hardware updates. If this does not work, I suggest you respond back with the OS version so we can go forward with fixing your issue.

Good Luck!
