I have the family size belgian waffle maker, it cannot be immersed, and the grids do not seem to come out. Yet it says to wash with soap and water. can I spray it over the sink? Should I use dishwash liquid on a soft brush? Or am I missing how the plates come out?

I use a wet vegatable brush to clean the grids. You should not get any water behind the grids so you have to be careful when you do this. Then I use a paper towel to dry the grids.
The waffle iron does not need a whole lot of cleaning since the waffles come out of the teflon grids pretty cleanly.
