Question about Dell E173FP 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Monitor "sleeps" I have an HP Laptop w/Vista - I don't believe that my question is a problem - rather it's probably that I don't know how to adjust a setting or two. - My laptop monitor goes off after about 10 minutes or so - so I have to go over and hit a key or move my mouse so that it comes back up again - This is annoying when I am trying to look at a video on the screen - if I dont run over fast enough, I am recording a blank screen - Can I adjust the "sleep" time so that my monitor stays on longer?

I am so glad - you saved me oodles of time - I was too lazy (in my post-Holiday mood) to look up anything in the Control Panel - and I wasn't sure that it could be done anyway - Thanks a million !!!

By the way, one of the tech persons I know says that the message that you get stating "there are unused icons on your desktop" cannot be permanently stopped ( I know there are unused items - but I would rather keep them. I also realize that this message is more of a service to me - telling me that I should consolidate or delete some of them) Can this message be stopped?

There are two places where the sleep time can be affected, both of which are accessed through the Control Panel that is normally an item on the Start menu.
Check the Display folder first and look for Screen Saver. This can be turned off completely or set to longer delays. The second, is the Power Options provided more for laptop users to conserve battery life but also can control the shutdown of your monitor. Power Options aren't too important to desktop machines but the options are still listed.

I see that message occasionally too and once went through the procedure to see if it offered the option to discontinue the warning but there wasn't one so I just took my darned shortcuts back out of the folder that I do like available and just punch out its lights when it does pop up.
It does seem though that since I let it create the folder that it has become far less frequent.
Maybe the pig just wants to be fed now and then.

Glad your display doesn't wink out on you any more; Happy New Year :-)

My Dell Inspiron notebook keep turning display off and then go to sleep later.

Go into the Windows Control panel, then to power settings. There you can adjust the settings for the monitor sleep behavior, as well as computer sleep and hibernation.

There are seperate settings for while plugged into power and while on battery.

If you have trouble, just let me know which operating system (XP, Vista, Win7, etc) you are running and I will give you step by step instructions.

Hope this helps you,

-Ben

My HP w2007 has started clicking to Monitor Going to Sleep and then going blank. I have never known how to wake it up so I have to turn the whole computer off and restart. HELP

Hey there, Normally simply pressing a random key on your keyboard or moving your mouse should wake it up, if it doesn't though I think the easiest way to solve this is to simply turn off the sleep mode after x amount of time.
If you have windows 7, press the start button and type in "power options", go ahead and open power options and there you will be able to set the time it takes before your PC shuts down, and you can also set it to never.

If you still wish to use this feature but just want to be able to it's a bit tricky and it won't even work for all PCs but if the keyboard waking isn't working, then it's probably because your pc does have this feature. When your PC is off, boot it up again and enter the bios by pressing F10 i believe it is for HP. And somewhere you should be able to set which devices are allowed to wake up your computer, all devices are probably disabled now, so go ahead and enable the keyboard to wake up your computer. Now save and exit, and the next time your PC goes to sleep mode you should be able to wake it up by pressing a key on your keyboard.

My stand will not go back so I can attach the base...please assist

Hello and welcome to fixya.

I believe you are trying to assemble the monitor and you don't have the manual in hand so here are two links that might help you out:

1. The hp w1907 user manual - see page 13 for assemble instructions or page 22 (if you are looking to only adjust the monitor height).

2. An eHow.com brief explanation.

If you are looking for disassembling the monitor itself to repair it, please let me know so I can re-post another solution although there are a couple of youtube videos already online to show complete repair instructions for the specific monitor.

Let me know if this helped you at all for this.

Thanks.

HP monitor going into sleep mode right after turning it on

If it goes in to sleep mode, that means that the monitor is not getting a signal from the computer.
The things to try (from simplest to most complex) are:

  1. Make sure the computer is on and not in "sleep" mode -- press the "Caps Lock" key and see if it lights up the caps-lock light on the keyboard.
  2. Make sure the video cable is connected from the computer to the monitor (that the cable hasn't come loose on either end)
  3. If your monitor has multiple inputs, make sure it's set to the right (probably analog VGA or DVI) input
  4. If your computer has more than one video output (like a laptop with it's internal screen plus the external monitor) then make sure the external monitor is enabled
If none of those solve it, post a comment back here and we can dive in to the more complex tests

My hp w2207 keeps going to sleep about every 30 misn or so while i am watching movies on it how do i stop this issue?

It is probably going to sleep because it's not getting any keyboard input.
You'll need to go to the control panel and the power options and tell it not to go to sleep or at least increase the time that it will remain idle before going to sleep.

Watching movies is not input, so it thinks you are not using it.

I have a problem with my monitor hpw1907v

Not sure which windows you are using but on my Vista there is also a setting for power saving on the PCI Express video card. Have you tried changing that setting. Not sure if that would be the problem but worth a try. Mine is set for maximum power saving but it hasn't turned off on me except while watchng a video. I haven't played a game so don't know if it affects games. It's under advance power settings \ PCI express \ Link state power managment. Turn it to Off and see what happens.
I am guessing you are playing games with a joystick because using a mouse or keys would probably stop the computer turning off the screen. Is there a setting under your game controller preferences for power saving?
You might also have a seperate control panel that installed with your video card that lets you change settings outside of Windows. I have Nvidia Control Panel on mine you might have something else. Maybe you can change something there as well.

Starlogic 17'' as dual display not clear

Check and see if your NVIDIA drivers are up to date. Then try changing the resolution on your laptop to match the native resolution on the monitor and see if it works. If it does then you will need to look for the option to set custom resolutions on each monitor so that you can have both devices working at diferent resolutions if 1 is wide screen and the other is not.

Let me know if this does not work and you need more help.
