Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

1 Answer

Windows Update will not work

After scanning my computer, it says no updates are needed, but I haven't had an update for over eight months. Belarc Advisor says I am missing 23 critical updates. I don't get any errors, just says no updates are needed.

Microsoft support was useless trying to repairthis problem.

I am running XP Home edition - SP3 failed to install.

  • tiger_ron415 Dec 31, 2008

I tried it, to no avail. The Microsoft chat person tried it too, but it didn't work then either. I guess I'll just have to reload Windows to get this fixed.

You will need to purchase a new lisense if the Windows Product Key sticker is not there or valid.

You can install Belarc software if you have a valid key and just need the key, becuase the sticker is gone.

Download service pack3

This is the download link for Windows XP SP3 (Click HERE), but if you haven't installed all the microsoft's updates on your system, I don't think it will work. To update all the required updates, open your Internet Explorer, click Tools and the select "Windows Update" and follow the onscreen instructions.

After formating; i get error 800b0100 at the 39 minute of setup. This occurred 6 times. I did a complete format 3 times and quick format 3 times

Windows Update Error 800B0100
If you receive the Windows Update error 800b0100, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is not registered with Windows correctly. The System Update Readiness Tool can correct some conditions that cause this error. To use the tool, follow these steps:
  1. Go to the System Update Readiness Tool webpage. In the Information for advanced users section, find the version of Windows and system type of your computer, and then click the link to download the System Update Readiness Tool. If you don't know which version of Windows you have, see View your computer information.
  2. Run Windows Update again.
gl_ico.png Note Typically, the scan takes 15 minutes or less, but it can take longer on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.

My latest download has not downloaded for some reason leastways not all of it-my PC has carried out the usual automatic procedure but the closure page still shows that one or more is still awaiting...

Sometimes a third party firewall will block the microsoft website, even if you've not had a previous problem with it. If you are using a firewall, check the settings and blocked sites.

You may want to go to the microsoft update site:
and do a manual download and install. Just click on "express."

Another option would be to download and install Belarc Advisor:
Give it a few minutes to run and it will give you a run down on all your Microsoft updates, if any are missing. You can then go directly to microsoft and download the specific update that (if) Belarc determines is missing.

Stopping Windows updates

Go to Control Panel --> go to Security Center --> Automatic Updates and go to it's options, properties or preferences page. Select "Turn off automatic updates"

A sidenote though, I honestly do not think your online virus scan is reliable. If you update by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update there will be no virusses. There's a big change the scanner itself is harmful software named Scareware (it tells you something is wrong, or potentionally harmful, then it tells you to download an exotic virusscanner or something to protect you but infect creates even more trouble by means of spam, spyware, pop-ups or trojans.)

Try installing a virus scanner from a trustes developer. Don't want to pay for it? Don't worry. There are some pretty good (and trusted) free ones.

Try this one:
[Grisoft AVG Free Edition]
