Question about Dell OptiPlex 330 Minitower Desktop Computer

2 Answers

My computer keeps freezing upon start-up.

I need to boot it up three or four times until it "sticks." I've removed all except one anti-virus program (bitDefender). I am open to any suggestions.

You may have a corrupt Master Boot Record. Try this, insert your Windows CD and let it run. It will look it is installing but it really is not. After a few minutes it will stop and ask you if you want to install or fix. Choose fix and then reboot. That fixes the Master Boot Record, if that is the problem. Involuntary reboots are a little tricky to pin down exactly what the problem is.

Does it re-start before or after it gets to Windows? If before, it could be the power supply going bad.

My computer is freezing up, won't do nothing

Freezing often occurs when your computer is receiving several commands at the same time.

First check your Startup Menu and turn off (uncheck) any programs that don't need to run upon starting up (Go to Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG, select "Start Up" tab and uncheck those needless programs). You can always turn programs on manually when needed (such as media players, games, Instant Messaging, etc.)

Second, check the Options or Preferences in your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and make certain you don't have a constant scan occuring that will slow down your applications.

Third, turn off any programs or applications that might be running but that you're not using. The fewer programs you have running at one time, the less your computer has to process.

Fourth, when your computer freezes, click on your Control/Alternate/Delete keys at the same time and only once. A window will open called a Windows Task Manager. Select the "Applications" tab if it's not already selected, and highlight any programs which are "Not Running." Then click on "End Task" for those programs only. This way you don't have to restart your computer.

Fifth, notice those programs that seem to cause your computer to freeze and either remove them, replace them or reinstall them.

Start-up menu

NO - absolutly not.

Untick all except your Anti-Virus and Firewall, if windows needs a program in start up it will "re-tick" it automaticly.

It would be a very good idea to run c-cleaner (free program) , adaware (free program by lavasoft) and spybot to make sure there are not any spyware programs on your computer slowing it down also.
