Same problem - HP dual core processor, Windows VISTA. Random bursts of Thunder from the system speakers (located on the monitor). Does not sound like static - sounds like recorded thunder.

I have the same problem too. Not a speaker glitch, but actual sound of recorded thunder. Happens randomly. I think its a virus but Malware can't find it. Frustrating!!!!

I heard the thunder too, then found this posting. I found in "settings" of the weather toolbar I ahd recently installed that the "sound alerts" could be clicked off. That will probably do it.

That is normal, but you better put the volume to minimum to avoid damage to the speaker and to your ear.
When you plug it in, the connectors are receiving sudden voltage increase, this is what you hear as thunder.

Easier to buy a set of external speakers. Just make sure you have a sound card that has a port to plug the speaker into. If not it's still easier to buy a PCI Sound Card and a set of speakers.

It sounds something else is wrong, try plugging out every pci, pci-e, and usb. If the problem still persist, try updating your motherboard driver and cmos driver.
If all the above fails, then you have a bad motherboard. Then there's nothing else you can do but buy a new pc or replace the motherboard.

Would like to connect speakers. Does this computer have a sound card in it? Moniter is hp w1701. Does it have speakers in the moniter?

well depends on the Computer brand! most computers come with a sound card... sometimes there is onboard and pci :) either way look behind your computer where all the plug-ins are and there should be 3 small holes that will allow the plug of speakers... :) hope this helps!

Computer crashed,i changed the hard drive and now i have no sound

Check that they are plugged into the Green socket. Open Volume control from the taskbar and check that Wave and Volume controls are turned up. If still nothing, check the speakers by plugging headphones in in place of them. Hope this helps. :)

Tells me speakers not plugged in

Check that the speakers are plugged into the correct audio port, this is usually an apple green colour. Next go into device manager and check all drivers are installed correctly. Below is some further advice I wrote for another user.
You should first check you have not accidentally muted it in both windows and on the speakers itself. Next go into Device Manager and check the sound driver is installed (no yellow exclamation marks can be seen).
If this has not resolved the problem then it is probably your soundcard. If you soundcard is integrated onto the motherboard then there may be further defects.
Check what internal ports you have free, there should be some long ports called PCI or PCI-e (not ports in line with the RAM). You can then buy a PCI/PCI-e sound card and it will just clip into the slots.
Hope this helps,

Wharfedale s20030 speakers broken?

First, check input power (electricity) of your speaker. You can see lamp indicator on speaker (usually LED lamp, Light Emitting Diode, green light or else) must be light ON.
Two, jack line out (usually green) on the speaker, you must touch that jack. Don't worry, you can't heart attack cause of it (for touching that jack, DC-Direct Current supply). If you hear some noise, sound of droning, buzzing, that is indicate of sound will be come out from that speaker.
Three, you play WinAmp software (or Windows Media Player, from Microsoft) and get in one of mp3 file, and load it into WinAmp player. Make sure if your mp3 file is normally sound.
Four, plug in your green jack (of speaker) to the line in of your sound card (refer to mainboard PC, if your soundcard get in ONBOARD or plug in PCI slot). Green jack line of speaker to socket green of sound card.
Five, now you can hear sound of your song....

I have just set up my new Acer desktop and there is no sound. I do not have external speakers

Well, the first thing you either neet to get some speakers, or use an ear phone to determine if you are indeed hearing anything. Sometimes I notice my computer would show a red x over the volume indicating that there is a conflict.
I would suggest you try in the following order;
  1. Make sure the speakers cable is plugged into the "GREEN" outlet at the back
  2. Get some external speakers and test the sound
  3. Get some earphones if you cant get speakers
  4. Restart your computer
  5. If same,
  6. if your computer have pci audio card, take it out and reseat it. Make sure your computer is shut down of course.
  7. if it is onboard, you'll need to check and see in device manager if the audio card drivers is showing a problem and update it.
Hope one of the above combination of solutions help.
