Question about D-Link DI-714P+ Enhanced 2.4GHz (802.11b) Wireless Router Plus Print Server (NTRTDLDI714P)

1 Answer

Two: (1) wireless connection drops often (2) no security is set

(1) My D-Link DI-714p+ router drops the wireless connection often. The problem is not the laptop, as both of ours lose the connection simultaneously even when next to the router.
(2) The LAN is unsecured. Can I password protect it? Does that mean I'll have to use encryption?

Could these problems be connected, i.e. our updates XP and Vista Enterprise operating systems may be killing the unsecured connections after some time?

Please call dlink tech support at 877-453-5465. just an advise on how to handle the call when you reach dlink tech support (agent); do not agree to call back after you troubleshoot with them (they'll be giving you a case id reference# and be advising you to check your pc or call "who" and call them back to continue the troubleshooting). insist to the agent that he need to resolve the problem asap (by the way, agents are not allowed to drop the call or they'll be dead-history!). and if the agent still insisted you to call back, ask for a "senior level technician" to finish the job (escalate the problem).
fyi: dlink tech support handling time to resolve a call is 15 to 18 minutes only. if you reach that 15-18 minutes (max) time the agent will think of a way for you to call back (advising you to check with your pc manufacturer, check with your ISP, call microsoft to update your software, etc... non-sense!) they need to do this in order to reach their handling time (agents need to reach 21 to 25 billable calls, and billable calls are "solution provided", "resolved", and "dropped call"). ---- believe me, i was one of them and repented.

Basically ypu will need to change the wireless settings of the router.
To change the wireless settings you will need to access the router set up page.
Is there any computer connected to the router? If not then you will need to connect one computer to the router with the cable. Dlink DI-514 dropping my wireless connections

Your router probably needs a firmware upgrade to accommodate the throughput from the ISP server.
1. check with your provider to see if you have issue with your cable or DSL line.
Sometime if it is a DSL line it is the drop to your house , ( rodent chews in the line; rain or moisture, or dangling and not secured.
2.Cordless phones to close to the router will cause disconnection.
3. A firewall setting in an anti virus software can cause disconnect if not properly configured.
4. channell selection will cause disconnect on some older router such as yours and an new router is the only remedy because the router has come what is called " end- fo -life " and the manufacturer no longer support the router because of new router technology implemented.

D-link router connection problems

I'm guessing you're saying you've left the security open on the pc's, but what about the router? You can connect to most wireless routers with a TCP/IP cable. Try that and see if you can check your wireless router's settings. It may have some security settings enabled.
