I have a 50" Visio Plasma TV. There is significant distortion and "chirping" from the internal speakers. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, distortion on the video/display could be a number of possibilities. Pls post back the model number.

"Chirping" in most instances describes a condition of the switch mode power supply (SMPS) when it is operating beyond normal conditions such as in a partial short. Incidentally, a defective power supply could also cause video distortion such as when output B+ voltage is low. This normally is caused by a leaky or defective capacitor. Should you be interested, replacement for some Vision TVs are available here.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Chirping can be caused due the external noise ,check if there is any radio signal interference , if possible try to play a dvd and check if the sound exists if yes then you may need to change the speakers has it get deteriorated over time , If the sound does exists when playing a dvd then its the problem with signal cable or the source..You can always try a hard reset :
You can also try a hard reset: Unplug TV from AC mains and remove all cables from TV. Wait about 30 minutes and replug to AC power and redo the cabling. Switch on the TV and see if it works..

Good luck....

Sounds like power supply regulator board [SMPS] fault. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. I have 50"plasma tv with picture but no sound. It shut itself off a number of times before this happened. I have the back of the tv off. the model number is PN50A400C2DXZA version SM12

Well, it could be something inside, but it could also be a setting.
In SETUP, there's the option of using the internal speakers or external speakers. If it's set on external speakers and you don't have any connected, then you get no sound.

Bought a Wii and using the standard cables it played great on a new 50' Panasonic Plasma as well as on our 2 year old 32' VIZIO LCD. Just upgraded to a 46' Sony LCD (W series) and the Wii looks terrible...

The Wii can display on a HDTV, but keep in mind the output is only 480p. It is not true high definition, and it will only display this using a component video cable. There shouldn't be a difference with LCD and plasma.

You will also need to go to the display settings to force the Wii to display in 480p.

Try a different input (safe to assume your Sony has multiple?) and see if it is that specific input. Also, try a different device like a DVD player or VCR and see if you get the same result.

Good luck.

I have to have the voume at 30 to get good sound

Try going into the menu and selecting the sound menu and resetting the sound to factory default..If this doesnt help matters you can change the sound preferences to custom settings..As long as the sound isnt distorted at low volume then this solution will apply..If the sound is distorted at low volume then your speakers may be faulty..sometimes caused by listening to the tv at full volume over long term which strains the speakers and prematurely ages them

call 877-543-8325 this is an LG Executive call center and they will fix this for free. I have a 50" plasma I bought january 2006 which is out of warranty by 5 months. They faxed me and the LG repair shop a 30 day warranty for my tv to cover the repair. Just tell them you heard a pop and in my case the picture is distorted. All they need is the model number and serial number and they should take care of it. No arguing needed.
