Merry Christmas and thank you for the response. I got the top cover off, but can't see how to slide the side cover off. Can you please give additional insight? Thanks.

On Sonys, you have to remove the top cover first. Look in the back and you will see 2 tabs. Pinch them together and remove the top cover, then the side should slide off.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Look and see if there is a tab on the side cover or a metal clip that you push toward the front of the unit.

I have added 256MB memory to my Sony PCV-RX470DS desktop but it still only shows 256MB that was already installed. Do I need to change anything in BIOS or make any kind of hardware change via jumpers or...

You may need to re-seat the memory module.

Shutdown your PC, remove the newly added memory module. and re-plug it back in, this time when you install it make sure you hear a click noise when installing it to ensure its properly installed.

I doubt you need to update the BIOS to support more memory.

Otherwise you may have a dud memory module.

When installing/removing memory ensure you are properly earthed so that you don't zap and kill the memory.

How to remove the case cover of sony pcv-rx470ds desk top

View the back of your Sony Vaio PCV-RX470DS desktop computer.

On the upper right corner is a metal pull out tab. Flat thin bar, bent to the right. Pull it out, the side cover opens at the top.

Pull the side cover out a few inches at the top, lift it up, and out to remove.

This is Sony Support, Vaio PCV-RX470DS desktop PC, and the manuals download page,

Underneath the bold heading - Manuals,
scroll down to - System Reference Manual,
and left-click on it.

This is a PDF file download. A smaller window wil come up on the left.
Watch the download progress bar, and let the file download all the way.

Now you can go up on the right, and Maximize this PDF manual to full screen.

Page 42 has the information on opening the side panel.

(In case you are not familiar with PDF files, at the top is a header. To the right of the blue down arrow is the page number box.

To speedily go to the page you want, put your mouse cursor in the box, left-click one time.
Now type 42, and press the Enter key)

If you wish to save this file to your computer to;
A) Have it anytime you wish, and not have to download again.

B) Burn it to CD disk for safe storage, and delete it off of your computer, to increase harddrive storage capacity.

Go up to the top header, and left-click on the Floppy Disk icon.
This is the second icon from the left.

If you hover your mouse cursor over this icon, it will briefly reveal,
'Click to save this to your computer or another location'

After you have done so a smaller window will come up,
Save a copy...

At the bottom of the Save a copy window, you will see a box with File name:
to the left of it.
In the box you will see - PCVRX470DS_SR

This will be the name of the file, unless you add to the name for clarity in finding it.
You CANNOT clear the file name out, but you can add to it.

Put your mouse cursor in the box right after the R,
in SR.
Left-click twice.

Now make one space with your spacebar, and type Sony Vaio.
Makes it easier to find.

Now look up at the top of the window, at the box that has - Save in: to the left of it.
This is where the file will go.

If it has My Documents, or Documents, (If you are using a computer to download with that has Vista on it), it will go there.

(Windows XP: Start>My Documents)

If the box has Desktop in it, the file will go to your desktop screen.

Should you wish to change the destination of where this file will go, left-click on the blue down arrow, to the right of the Save in box.

A file tree will come up.
Now left-click right on the destination of where you want the file to go.
(My Documents? Desktop?)

To finish just go down to the bottom right, and left-click on - Save.

When you see the file name, Double-click on it to open it.

The System Reference Manual tells you;

1) Identifying Components
2) Configuring Your System
3) Removing, Installing and Replacing Components

5) Fax Modem Card ( And Giga Pocket Card)
6) Video Card (Graphics Card)

Remove outer cover

Have you checked the screws on the back? On most cases, if you look at the front of the case, it's the left that comes off, so look for any screws and any latches under the front face.
