Question about Sony StorStation FSV-E1 80 GB Network Hard Drive

1 Answer

User access After upgrading my PC to Windows Vista I can no longer authenticate on to the StorStation. I am running a Windows 2000 PDC and I have the workgroup name on the FSV set to the same domain name. I have tried creating a new user but every time I try to connect I just keep getting "Logon Unsuccessful". It all worked fine under XP and nothing else has changed. I have also tried building another Vista Workstation and that won't authenticate either. Any Ideas gratefully appreciated Cheers Andy

Re: user access

What version of vista are you using, this is a very important piece of information, vista home flavors are not very network friendly,I recommend that you keep using XP until a few service packs are out for vista. If your using ultimate then something else would be wrong, possibly a setting on the vista box, Im not real sure how vista's authentication works but if they changed it enough then it might require a compatiblity mode or something in order to authenticate with 2000/xp, but then again i could be wrong and vista might authenticate exactly the same way as 2000/xp, try setting an xp box up as a server and see if the vista box can authenticate with it, if so then maybe 2000 is the problem, sorry i couldnt give an actual solution but im still new to vista myself and dont have any pc's that will run it, my good computers are all macs.

Forgot password and cannot access drive. will pushing reset button cause me to lose all my files of just allow me to set new log on credentials

AS device requires that you downgrade to some obsolete level of security. Doesn't the vendor have documentation for exactly what is needed to make this work with Windows 7?

The data sheet I found seems to imply it's a really old device: "Compatible with Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/XP/2000/NT4.0".
you had to reset the drive back to factory default and reconfigure the users and accesses. The HD does not reformat when set back to factory defaults so no data was lost.
I wonder how many of these drives have been replaced just because the onboard processor needed to be reset.

Only the LAN Manager Authentication Level Change to Send NTMLv2 to Send LM & NTLMv2 session if negotiated was needed.

Dave thanks the suggestion to do a comparison during that process is when I thought of doing the reset to factory defaults.

Belkin N+N storage router doesn't work wirelessly

Hi, I had something like that with my Belkin Router N+N with USB F6D6230-4 V1, only I had a configuration wit a wired XP pc, Wireless XP and Wireless Vista. With both XP pc’s it was really plug and play, but with the Vista pc I had some problems to access the on the router connected USB drive. The Vista pc was connected to the network, and had Inet access. Other shared (network) drives were accessible on the Vista pc.

The first thing I tried was if I could access the drive trough its IP address, (\\routerIP in my case \\, and I did get a question for a username and password. The only thing is that I tried all the regular names like Admin, Administrator, and so on, with my password but I did not get access.
On the internet there was no help to find for this model router on the Belkin websites (diverent country’s), the data on the Belkin websites is out of date, there is no support to find for new models. ………. So finely I did took the phone and did call the support desk…

Solution to my problem:
The problem seems to be in the Belkin storage manager program, that program works not correct under Vista. When I enter the routers IP and use the username “guest” without a password, it get access to it from my Vista pc. The follow thing I did was press the right mouse button on the drive, and press on “make connection” So..

Username : guest
Password : none

Hope, that this is also the solution to your problem.

The Netherlands.

The drive stopped being accessible from Windows (XP, Vista or 7). Here are the symptoms: - The software can see and configure the drive no problems, though the drives don't show as nice images now as they...

Run or open the anti-virus software. Then, run the
Tune-up Utility of 2008 (from the internet free) to
optimize your registry. If this won't do the job, save
your important file in another hard drive. Then, you can reformat the hard drive.

Problems with Western Digital My Book World Edition

I have the same drive. It works great with windows XP but with Windows vista has difficulty seeing this type of drive and keeping the connection once it is established. Take it back if you have windows vista and then search for which 1TB drives work well with windows vista. It really has problems with windows vista 64bit. I was able to finally see the drive when I was using photoshop file/browse/network... then I dragged the shortcut Icon to my desktop and access the drive that way from that point on. Mine stopped completely tonight... I think the power cord went bad or something.

Problem Accessing Shared Folders in Network Stoarage Device

vista is only going to complicat things, try re mapping the drive, delete the shortcut and use my network places to find the drive then make a new shortcut to it if you can access it from there, i've had windows 2000 do the same thing especially with my laptop that I take to school, it a lot of times its due to changing ip's but occasionally windows just seems to forget where stuff is on the network and needs to be reminded. shortcuts can be made by draggin the folder to the desktop or desired location or right click the share you want mapped and select map network drive.

StorStation fails to boot up - blue screen of death

The beeping alarm could have been overheating. You could try taking the HDD out and putting it in a workstation to run chkdsk on it. Incidently what operating system does this model use? I have an FSV-E1 which seems to run some Unix type system.
