Question about Sony StorStation FSV-E1 80 GB Network Hard Drive

1 Answer

User access After upgrading my PC to Windows Vista I can no longer authenticate on to the StorStation. I am running a Windows 2000 PDC and I have the workgroup name on the FSV set to the same domain name. I have tried creating a new user but every time I try to connect I just keep getting "Logon Unsuccessful". It all worked fine under XP and nothing else has changed. I have also tried building another Vista Workstation and that won't authenticate either. Any Ideas gratefully appreciated Cheers Andy

    Hi
cheers for trying to help, I dont think that the Server on my network has anything to do with the problem but I may be wrong, my reasoning behind this is that the Storstation uses its own set of users and passwords and is not windows based. I created users on the Storstation that are the same as the Domain users, this way under XP I never had to authenticate onto it as XP automatically submitted the current user logon information. I assume Vista also does this but just presents it in a different way that the Storstation doesn't like. My Vista version is Business.

    Any thurther ideas gratefully recieved

    A small additional thought....

Is it possible that because the Storstation only accepts usernames up to 8 characters that if Vista submits DOMAINNAME\Username that this is where the problem lies

What version of vista are you using, this is a very important piece of information, vista home flavors are not very network friendly,I recommend that you keep using XP until a few service packs are out for vista. If your using ultimate then something else would be wrong, possibly a setting on the vista box, Im not real sure how vista's authentication works but if they changed it enough then it might require a compatiblity mode or something in order to authenticate with 2000/xp, but then again i could be wrong and vista might authenticate exactly the same way as 2000/xp, try setting an xp box up as a server and see if the vista box can authenticate with it, if so then maybe 2000 is the problem, sorry i couldnt give an actual solution but im still new to vista myself and dont have any pc's that will run it, my good computers are all macs.

If You cannot enable 802.1x authentication on computers running Windows 2000 because support for 802.1x is not provided by default in Windows 2000. Therefore, the associated user interface (the Authentication tab) does not appear in the Network Connection Properties dialog box.

A supported feature that modifies the product's default behavior is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to modify the behavior that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that specifically require it. This feature may receive additional testing. Therefore, if the system is not severely affected by the lack of this feature, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this feature.

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

After you apply this update, follow these steps to enable 802.1x authentication:
  1. Installing the hotfix installs the 802.1x service in the disabled state. To change the Wireless Configuration service startup to Automatic: Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. Click Services and Applications, and then click Services. Set the Startup value for the service to Automatic, and then start the service.
  2. Open Network Connections by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking Network Connections.
  3. Right-click the wireless connection for which you want to enable or disable 802.1x authentication, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Authentication tab, do one of the following:
    • To enable 802.1x authentication for this connection, click to select the Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1x check box. By default, this check box is selected.
    • To disable 802.1x authentication for this connection, click to clear the Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1x check box.
  5. In the EAP type box, click the Extensible Authentication Protocol type that is to be used with this connection.
  6. If you click Smart Card or other Certificate in the EAP type box, you can configure additional properties if you click Properties and then follow these steps in Smart Card or other Certificate properties:
    • To use the certificate that is located in the certificate store on your computer for authentication, click Use a certificate on this computer.
    • To verify that the server certificate that is presented to your computer is still valid, click to select the Validate server certificate check box, specify whether to connect only if the server is located in a particular domain, and then specify the trusted root certification authority.
    • To use a different user name when the user name in the certificate is different from the user name in the domain to which you are logging on, click to select the Use a different user name for the connection check box.
  7. If you click Protected EAP (PEAP) in the EAP type box, your Windows user name and password are used for authentication.
  8. To specify whether the computer should try authentication on the network if a user is not logged on, if the computer or user information is not available, or both, follow these steps:
    • To specify that the computer try authentication on the network if a user is not logged on, click to select the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available check box. By default, this check box is selected.
    • To specify that the computer try authentication on the network if user information or computer information is not available, click to select the Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable check box.

Pls how can I remove authentication password from dell inspiron B130.

This is for Windows XP, for Vista/Win 7, the names might be different but the steps will be the same. Click on Start and then Control Panel. Click on the User Accounts link. In the pick an account to change area of the User Accounts window, click on your Windows XP user name. Choose the Remove my password link. In the text box on the next screen, enter your current password. Click the Remove Password button to confirm that you'd like to remove your account password. Now that your Windows XP account password has been deleted, you will no longer need to log on to Windows XP when your computer starts. Windows will now load all the way to your desktop automatically.

On startup, i get the message: Isass.exe - Access Denied

Information on lsass.exe - http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/lsass.exe.html

Are you running a firewall (such as zonealarm)? It might be your firewall may be blocking a legit attempt by lsass.exe to run. You may have to add this to your firewall's allowed list. Of course if you are not running a firewall or if your firewall is already set to allow lsass you may have even greater problems.

Is PDC required to create trust between 2 AD 2003 forests.

1. Open Active Directory Domains And Trusts from Administrative Tools.
2. In the console tree pane, select and right-click the domain node for the forest root for which you want to create a trust.
3. Select Properties.
4. Select the Trusts tab in the Properties dialog box.
5. Click New Trust and click Next (skip the Welcome screen).
6. On the Trust Name page, enter the DNS name of the target domain for your trust (for our example, it is Cogswellcogs.com) and click Next.
7. Select Forest Trust on the Trust Type page and click Next. (If the Forest Trust option is missing, you may have omitted one of the prerequisites. In that case, double-check the DNS Forwarders tab and the forest functional level of all the domains in both forests.)
8. Choose a direction for the trust relationship: Two-Way, One-Way Incoming, or One-Way Outgoing.
  • Two-Way: All users in both forests will be able to access all resources in both forests.
  • One-Way Incoming: All users in this forest will be able to access all resources in the other forest but not vice versa.
  • One-Way Outgoing: All users in the target forest will be able to access all resources in this forest but not vice versa.
After you’ve chosen, click Next.
    9. Resource access is still governed by permissions in the domain where the resource exists. The trust direction provides access to all resources where permissions allow access. Select the sides of the trust relationship: This Domain Only or Both This Domain And The Target Domain.
    • This Domain Only: Creates the trust relationship in this domain only; an administrator on the other end will have to complete the other trust.
    • Both This Domain And The Target Domain: Requires sufficient access in the remote domain and will allow you to complete the trust setup.
    10. Select the appropriate path, depending on the choices you made in the previous two steps.
    • If you chose Two-Way or One-Way Outgoing in step 8 and This Domain Only in step 9, you will need to select a trust authentication level. Domain-Wide Authentication will authenticate all users in the remote forest for all resources in the local forest. Choosing Selective Authentication will allow you to specify which users in the remote domain have access to local resources. Click Next. Enter a password for the trust and click Next.
    • If you chose One-Way Incoming in step 8 and This Domain Only in step 9, enter the password for the trust in the Trust Password and Confirm Password boxes. Click Next.
    • If you selected both domains (this domain and the selected domain) in step 9, a username and password box will appear to allow you to enter the username and password of an administrator account in the target forest. Click Next.
    11. On the next screen, verify all of your selections. When you click Next, the wizard creates the trust. Verify the settings of the new trust.
    12. Confirm the outgoing trust. Select Yes if you created both sides of the trust; select No if you did not.
    13. Click Finish in the Creating The Trust wizard.
The new trust will appear on the Trusts tab in the Properties dialog box for the domain.

The beeping alarm could have been overheating. You could try taking the HDD out and putting it in a workstation to run chkdsk on it. Incidently what operating system does this model use? I have an FSV-E1 which seems to run some Unix type system.
