I have a flip mino; been using flip for mac - no problems; downloaded new flipshare (12/26/08) "played with it" by editing, adding text slide, tried to email using flipshare email feature - problems began: 1) did not email, and now 2)every time try to open get the "unexpectedly quits problem". I am running this on a Mac OS X 10.5.6. Any ideas?

New Mino-HD. When I run the flipshare application the splash screen loads, and then it freezes. Splash screen stays "always on top". Have to use Task Manager to kill it. Strange is that it was working, and I can't seem to figure out what changed on my system to make it stop. Still works on my 2nd PC (so far).

    Flipshare locks at splash screen

  • tscrim1 Mar 12, 2009

I don't think the problem is particularly related to the spec of the PC. The program worked a few times on my AMD 2.8GHz machine, and then started with the frozen splash screen. Yet it consistently works ok on my underpowered 1.7GHz laptop.

Interestingly, I found another way to unfreeze it (other than by killing FS in the task manager). If you remove 3ivx the splash comes to life (and complains that it's missing 3ivx). I've tried uninstalling both and deleting any relevant registry entries - then reinstalling either from the Mino HD or from the Pure website. Same problem... Sigh... will work on this some more.

  • Anonymous Mar 13, 2009

My share program worked for a few weeks on my desktop and then crapped out on me. It won't work on my laptop either. i have uninstalled/reinstalled the program on each computer and it still doesn't work. even worse - winamp, vlc, windows media player won't play the .mp4 files. really bummed :o(

  • roZeex Mar 19, 2009

I've been trying to download & install their FlipShare software for several months now. Each time the installation is terminated with this error message: "There is a problem with the Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Is this some kind of perverse joke on the part of Pure Digital Technologies, Inc.?

  • sjridge Mar 23, 2009

I have the same problem. Using Flip video Ultra. Worked ok for a few weeks then froze on the splash screen. Flip video support says to download new version which I tried but then I get a "a script required for this install to complete could not be run. contact your support personnel or package vendor" error message.

I have tried installing the newest window installer but still get the same error message.

I am using WinXP Service Pack 3

    Flip video supprt is useless.

I have a relatively new flip mino HD and I didn't have any problems in the beginning. I did downloaded the suggested update and tried to use the editing features and all hell broke loose.

At this point, every time I plug in the Flip to the USB I get the same issue with it unexpectedly quitting. Not cool. I need help!!!

  • pommommgr May 02, 2009

    mine also stopped.

I can click and click, nothing happens.

  • Anonymous May 03, 2009

    Hi,
I have a PC with Windows Vista, 2.3Ghz - when installing the application it kept on freezing on the splash screen. Tried it on my laptop (much older machine with Windows XP), and it installed fine.
Came back to this post to read instructions, uninstalled what it had installed already (FlipShare and 3vix), then removed FFDshow. After removing FFDshow it installed fine on the machine with Vista.
    Hope this helps :)

Solved - I had the same problem.

The original "Flip Video For PC" software that came preinstalled on my Flip worked fine. But after being nagged to "upgrade" to FlipShare, I experienced the same crash problem mentioned here. Even worse, the FlipShare installation nuked the original program files from the Flip!

In my case, I think my computer's processor did not meet the minimum system requirements of the newer FlipShare software. The original "Flip Video For PC" software requires a 2Ghz P4 or higher; the FlipShare software says it requires a dual-core 4Ghz or higher. So when the FlipShare software tries to load the ippvideodecoder.ax module on an under-powered processor, it just crashes. Bad design.

I bet that most of the people posting this same problem here have processors that are "borderline".

Anyway, here's how to get the original Flip Video software back and re-install it on your computer:

Disclaimer: I assume no responsibility if you screw up your Flip or lose your videos. I can only tell you this method worked for me.

1) Use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to uninstall FlipShare and 3vix.

2) Download "Flip Video For PC" v3.7 from here:
http://www.theflip.com/app/prius/37/update/

3) Follow the written instructions here for formatting your Flip and reinstalling the software:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYc8N3dmxhU

Important: this guy tells you how to back up any existing videos on your Flip BEFORE you format it.

After formatting, I had some initial trouble with the installation not finding my (empty) Flip. Here's a workaround: the installation creates a folder called "FlipVideo Updater Support Files", and within that a subfolder called "files_to_install". Copy the entire contents of that subfolder to the root of your Flip. Re-run the installation and it should now be recognized.

4) Bonus: once you've got the old software reinstalled and working, you may want to disable the annoying "Upgrade To FlipShare" nag screen that bugs you every time you run the software. Simply browse your Flip and delete the following file:

[drive letter]\System\VIEWER\PD\checkForUpdate.txt

No more nag screen!

I hope this info is helpful to those who experienced the same problem. Flip tech support people are absolutely clueless.

best,
JohnB

tscrim1, after reading your post, I have to agree with you about the possibilty of FlipShare (more accurately ippvideodecoder.ax;) not getting along well with FFDshow. I've got FFDshow on my system too.

Howver, if you still want to keep using FFDshow, you could follow the instrucions in my previous post to reinstall the older Flip Video for PC software. I actualy like it better than FlipShare anyway.

This is the solution that worked for me that was provided by Flipshare. I have an HP notebook pc using a flipmino and Windows Vista.

1. Go to Control Panel>Add or Remove programs and remove any reference to 3ivx, Muvee plug-in, and Flip Share.
2. Reboot your computer.
3. Go to www.theflip.com/softwareupdate save the Flip Share update to your computer (make sure your camcorder is NOT connected)
4. After you have saved this to your computer, double click the Flip Share icon to run the setup and install Flip Share onto your machine.
5. Reboot your computer.
6. After reboot, connect your camcorder - cancel any window that pops up asking if you want to view the files using the software on the camcorder. The FlipShare software should start automatically.
7. Accept the message that says that it will upgrade the software on your camcorder - IMPORTANT - Watch the progress bar in the bottom left hand corner of the FlipShare software window, as this will tell you when the process of updating your camcorders software is complete.

Flip tech support came back to me on this one and asked if had FFDshows (codecs) installed. I'd actually installed this not long after getting my Mino HD, and Flipshare stopped working around that time. So... I uninstalled FFDshows, and Flipshare started working immediately. It's a bit of a pain as FFD is one of the best codec sets, but I'll try out some others.

Dear Flip, I like my minoHD, but you forgot one thing, the capability to burn the videos onto a DVD! I should have done more research on your product before I purchased. Flipshare is the most ridiculous piece of **** software I have ever seen from a company. I called technical support and was told I am on my own to figure out how to burn a DVD. I feel sorry for customers who are not technical savvy, they will never figure out how to get the videos onto a DVD. As an example, when you press your fake "Create DVD" button, it sends you to a website where you have to buy an online service to burn a DVD. The other option is to send the file to my desktop! I don't see Flip video's ever taking off as a viable alternative to a camcorder. I will not ever recommend a Flip video to anyone, until there is an easy solution to burn a DVD. If I could get my money back, I would in an instant. Signed, a very unsatisfied and disappointed customer.

After reading johnnyzero's solution, but before attempting it, I contacted Flipshare support and told them I wanted to revert back to version 3.7, because I was having the same problem as many others with "older" computers. This is there response:

You will first need to reformat your camcorder prior to reinstalling the older version Flip Video Program. Please note that you will need to move your videos to a separate location, such as your desktop, prior to reformatting. After downgrading you will have to import all of your videos back into the older Flip application (note: this will have to be done AFTER downgrading). The steps are listed below the reformatting/reinstall instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PC:

Please go to your Control Panel and select Add or Remove programs, also called Programs and Features on Vista, and remove any instance of 3ivx, Muvee and FlipShare.

After this is done, please reboot your computer and reconnect your camcorder.

*Please note:
If you have videos on your camcorder that you wish to save, you will need to move your videos to a separate location prior to reformatting your camcorder. Once your camcorder has been reformatted, all data on the camcorder will be erased. To move your videos, please open your DCIM>100VIDEO folder that resides in your camcorder's root directory. Copy the files into another folder outside the DCIM>100VIDEO folder, and outside the Flip Video directory.

Please follow these steps to format your camcorder on your PC:
1. Connect your camcorder to your computer
2. Close any window that pops up asking what you would like to do
3. Open My Computer.
4. Right click on the Flip Video icon.
5. Click on Format.
6. Under File System, open the drop down list and choose FAT
7. Click Start and then click OK.

After this is done, please go to the following link to re-install the older version of the software: http://www.theflip.com/app/prius/37/update/

To import your videos into the older Flip program:

The Flip videos program will only recognize videos that have been saved to your computer using the program feature "Save to Computer". These videos are saved into a specific file path "My Documents">"My Videos">"Flip Share Data">"Videos" when using FlipShare.

You can save your videos back to your camcorder manually. Please connect your camcorder to your computer and double-click the Flip Video icon in “My Computer” (PC). Then double-click the DCIM folder, and open the 100VIDEO folder, which is where you will find the videos already on the camcorder. Select the videos that are saved on your computer, copy them, and paste them in the 100VIDEO folder. Please be advised that your camcorder will only recognize videos that are carrying their original names. If you renamed your videos when you saved them to your computer, it may be beneficial to name them again in the same fashion as the original names: VID#####, wherein ##### is any number between 00001 and 99998 (for example VID00001).

Please be aware that you will be prompted to upgrade your software again. We advise against doing so.

Please do not hesitate to contact us further.

Thank you,
Flip Video Support

The only thing they didn't mention was after setup, when you click install, you will eventually get a message that says Flipshare is unable to determine what version is currently on the camcorder. Don't get alarmed. Just follow the intructions it gives which is to 1. Safely disconnect camcorder from computer. 2. Turn camcorder on. 3. Reconnect camcorder to computer. 4. Perform setup again.

You will then get another message that says the software will install over an unknown previous software version on your camcorder. Just click install. Everything worked fine for me. But I really have to thank Johnnyzero for his help. Also, Flip support didn't offer the solution of how to get rid of the annoying "Upgrade" message, which Johnnyzero did.

I'm a little confused. When I open my flip (3.7) version now, after reverting back from Flipshare 4.0, an additional window opens asking if I want to use or not use ffdshow and giving several options like "Don't use this one time" "Use this one time", "Use all the time" , etc. I selected "Don't use this one time" and the Flip videos, movie mix, etc. worked fine., Is ffdshow associated with Flip 3.7 or Flip 4.0?

The same thing happened to me. But this fixed it! I have a mac. Hope this works for you too. We will need to try to uninstall and reinstall the FlipShare program on your Macintosh computer. To do this please try the following:

1. Please open your HD and in the search field type “3ivx”. Drag all 3ivx files into your trash can, and empty it. To uninstall FlipShare on your Mac, please go to MacIntosh HD > Library > Application > Support > Flip Video > FlipShare Uninstaller
2. Reboot the computer

If you are receiving the message, "Unable to update database file," when upgrading to FlipShare 5.6, there may be a corrupted file within your existing FlipShare database.

Please try the following to upgrade to the current version of FlipShare and import your videos into the application.

1. Copy your entire FlipShare Data folder onto your desktop or another drive
- the FlipShare Data folder can be found in "Username">Movies>Flip Share Data>
- ensure that you have copied all of the contents of the FlipShare Data folder and have secured a complete back-up of this file

2. Delete the FlipShare Data folder from your "Username">Movies>Flip Share Data>

3. Uninstall FlipShare
- MacIntosh HD > Library > Application Support > Pure Digital Technologies > FlipShare Uninstaller

4. Reboot your computer

5. Click on the link and follow the on-screen instructions to install FlipShare 5.6 onto your computer

For Macintosh systems (including Snow Leopard): http://download.theflip.com/update.theflip.com/app/fvsw/561/update/Setup_FlipShare.dmg

6. Once FlipShare 5.6 has fully installed, launch the program

7. Go to the Help directory and choose "Recover other FlipShare files..."

8. Click Proceed and select the Videos folder of the drive where you saved your FlipShare Data folder
- the FlipShare Data recovery tool will import your videos into FlipShare

Should the issue persist, please do not hesitate to contact us again so we may further troubleshoot.

Thank you,
Flip Video Support

Open notepad
paste the following text

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
objFSO.MoveFolder "C:\program files\3ivx" , "C:\program files\WorkAround"

REM You may have to enable this depending on your system's speed
REM Wscript.Sleep 1500

Dim objShell
Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
objShell.Run "FlipShare.exe"

REM You may have to enable this depending on your system's speed
REM Wscript.Sleep 1500

REM This closes the error window that appears
objShell.SendKeys "{ENTER}"

REM Renames the folder back to original so program can use it.
objFSO.MoveFolder "C:\program files\WorkAround" , "C:\program files\3ivx"

///////////////////////////////////////////

close notepad and save as WorkAround.vbs

move this file to the FlipShare Directory
c:\program files\Pure Digital Technologies\FlipShare

Right click on this file and select "create a shortcut"

Move this short cut any where you like

Now use this shortcut to start your FlipShare program

For this to work you cannot let the camera trigger the FlipShare program, rather start the program before you connect the camera.

I experienced a similar crash with Windows XP using FlipShare version 5.9.19. I tried version 4.x and it failed with a different error because certain registry keys couldn't be added. This lead me to believe that there's something wrong with the registry. I then tried to add the keys manually to the registry using regedit and it failed as well. It turns out that the keys initially created by the installer do not have the correct permission and when the program tries to add data to the registry it fails, and hence the crash.

To fix it:
1) Run regedit.exe
2) Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Flip Video
3) Click on Edit -> Permissions and give read/write access to your user/group
4) Do the same for the child keys (eg. FlipShare and 5.9)
5) Run FlipShare; it should work now.

Hope this helps anyone else that runs into this problem. Cisco, if you read this, please fix your installer!

This advice below is great - but yes...the link he recommends is old and does not work. However - i got through step #1 and installed the 2 apps that he describes; plugged in my FlipMinoHD and it prompted me to re-install the FlipShare app. It installed no prob - and I was able to open my videos again. We'll see after I shutdown if it comes back up the next time (fingers crossed!!).

Dear Suzie,

Thank you for contacting us.

We will need to try to uninstall and reinstall the FlipShare program on your Macintosh computer. To do this please try the following:

Flip Ultra HD and Mac Os X -- version 10.5 Problems installing FlipShare Help! When I try to install Flip for Mac, it freezes in mid-installation, and never closes. It does install a Flipshare...

I had the same issue with my new ultra hd and my 2008 imac. Basically, I just downloaded flipshare from pure digital's website and all is good. Another problem I have run into is that when I first plug the camera in, it asks if I want to update the cameras software, when I click 'yes', it gives the error, "unable to update camera software."
Last but least, Imovie 08 gives an error when I try to import the movies. No biggie, I just double click on the "dcim" folder in the flip video folder of the camera and I can drag the videos to my desktop, then into Imovie.
So far, not the seamless experience I was expecting, as this unit is supposed to be 100% compatible with mac's.
