Question about IBM ThinkPad T30 2366 Notebook

3 Answers

I Have a Toshiba A135 Laptop I just bought from Ebay. The battery message says I have 6 % life on battery and battery not charging. Does this mean the battery needs replaced or the laptop not charging the battery? I hate to buy a new battery and find out its not the battery.

I tried your suggestion on turning off the laptop and turning it back on after one minute and then I reinstalled the battery, it started to charg and then stopped. It must be the battery. Thanks.

You have not clarified that its a new one or a second hand one. In any case If it has a problem, Please inform ebay about the problem and they'll make the seller pay for cheating you in selling you a defective piece.
Now your problem part .Its true that it can only be established in a repair shop that which one is the culprit the battery or the charging board. But there is one more thing ,i.e. the charger. Borrow from some of your friend just to check if it is charging.Exchange both Laptop and chargers. Then at least you can establish the charger is defective or not. You can also check the charger using a multimeter.
I have got something on net regarding this
Try removing the battery and reinserting it. Make sue it is properly inserted.

If computer is working OK while plugged in, then battery may be faulty. If computer is having problems then maybe power adapter is glitchy.
Clarification added 4 days ago: I also found this if you are running Windows Vista ...

"This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista.

Understanding battery charging issues.

If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt.

In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager.

This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues.

Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista

In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.

1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .

2. Expand the Batteries category.

3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .

WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.

4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .

Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .

Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power.

The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging."
Clarification added 4 days ago: Another tip I found:
1) Turn off the laptop
2) Remove the battery
3) Hold down the power button for ~1minute
Then everything should work fine.
Clarification added 4 days ago: A similar tip:
(1) Turn on computer w/ AC plugged in like always.
(2) Remove battery (keeping AC adapter plugged in).
(3) Shutdown computer.
(4) Replace battery.
(5) Wait a few minutes, and the lightning bolt icon which has usually been only flashing is now a steady blue while it charges the laptop, then turns off when the battery’s at 100%.

You may try
1) check the charging light on the laptop in on or blink when the adapter plug in (the adapter should be ok for power on laptop without the battery) the battery fail have to change if the light on., and also have to change the battery if the light blink.
2) there is a charging hardware problem when the charging light nothing show out when the adapter plug in if your adapter can power on the laptop normally.

you did all check show the battery is end life, but one more issue

there are two way to confirm charging circuit on the motherboard running ok, \

    1) go bios setup check the battery status showing charging is ok

and if take out the battery, then change to "no battery:" that's normal

    2) start windows go control panel and check power option the battery meter, show " charging" is ok. if not appear you may take out the battery and put back see any short appear "charging" on the screen, it is ok for appearing "charging" status,

in my service experience most percentage your battery is over life.

Unforutnately there is no way of telling if it is the battery or the charging board in the laptop. However, 98% of the time, it is the battery because the battery life in a laptop is very short.

Did you find this message helpful? If so, please give a good rating of fixya. Thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop and the battery will not keep a charge we bought new battery and AC adapter and still will not charge

since you have a new battery and new charger, you're almost certain to have a connector problem in the laptop... you can GENTLY use a pencil eraser (NOT a pen eraser; has to be one of the soft pink kind) and clean the corrosion/oils off the connector. Also remember that a new battery takes about eighteen hours to take a charge the very first time; they go a lot faster after the first time - good luck

Laptop is not getting charged once it is switched on. where as when the laptop is off it is getting charged. Very much reduced baterry life.

I would start off by looking at the output voltage of the charger then pull out a volt/ohm meter and see if its actually putting out the correct voltage. If it is then u have a bad battery or DC jack in the laptop.

TOSHIBA SATELLITE A200 BATTERY PROBLEMS

Hello,

This problem is very common and can be because of any of these reasons-

1-Wrong Charger,in case you are using some other charger ..i mean other than the one which came with your TOSHIBA laptop.

2-The transformer of the charger is releasing more than the rated voltage.

3-The earth terminal (one of 3 terminals of charger pin) is short (not working)..

I would recommend you to get TOSHIBA CHARGER OF SAME MODEL from your friend or go to TOSHIBA STORE and ask them for TOSHIBA (ORIGINAL) and connect it to see whether laptop its charging or not.

If it works then you need to change your charger

and if not, then you need to get the charging circuit repaired.

NEVER USE SOME OTHER CHARGER (OTHER THAN TOSHIBA) IT CAN SHORTEN THE LIFE OF YOUR BATTERY AND CAN EVEN SHORT YOUR CHARGING CIRCUIT.

have a nice time ahead...take care

My battery discharges when the laptop is on, it will charge when powwerd off, it is not the ac port on the back i tried to update the bios, tried a new battery, and it does show it charging when plugged in

if it charges with a new battery then there is nothing else that needs replacement but the battery. battery life span is one year so i suggest you replace it with a new one.

Either the battery is bad and not holding a charge, or the laptop's power jack needs to be repaired. Try this check.

Take out the battery and plug in the power adapter. Turn on the laptop and see if it operates normally. Gently wiggle the power plug and see if the power indicator on the computer remains steady. If it does, you should replace the battery. If the power light flickers as you wiggle the plug, the power jack in the computer needs repair.

It's a common problem for the power jack connections on the motherboard to break because the power plug gets flexed. When this happens, power doesn't get in from the charger to run the laptop or charge the battery. These connections can be repaired, but it means taking the computer apart to get the main board out to make the repair. Also, in some cases the board may be damaged by arcing and heating from the bad connections and may not be repairable. Usually resoldering the bad connections fixes the trouble.

A computer service shop could give an estimate for the repair. When I worked at a shop our repair charge was about $75 (I think; it's been over 5 years now). If you have electronic soldering skills and the right tools you could try the repair yourself. Several videos on youtube show the procedure for taking apart the computer to get the board out.

Hope this has helped you. If so, please take a moment to rate my solution. Thanks for asking here!
