Question about Apple iPod classic MP3 Player

My iPod classic 30 GB will not sync. If I hook it up to iTunes it says that the required disk cannot be found. I tried resetting and restoring it but it still won't work. In My Computer it says that there is no disk in the drive.

    I have a ipod classic 80gb. Everytime i try to sync cd or songs from my itunes library it give me a message. That your ipod can't be read or written to. Does anyone know what is happening or has a solution to correct this?

Unfortunately the only thing I could do to rectify this problem was "restore" my iPod which essentially means deleting everything and resyncing again. Very frustrating! I found this would happen if I plugged my iPod into my work computer where I didn't have full admin rights to the machine. It was corrupting the main file iTunes reads to see the directories on the iPod. So if you happen to be plugging it into another machine this might be the cause of it happening as I haven't had the problem since I stopped plugging it into my work machine.

Restoring an ipod


Make sure you got the latest itunes version and latest ipod classic version.  Also you need to be on the original computer you used to sync with the ipod.  Open up itunes and connect the ipod.  Your ipod should show up on the computer.  Just click on the restore itunes back to factory default button and you should be g to g.

I cant get my ipod to sync. the message i get is, "the ipod jeremy cannot be synced. the required disk cannot be found." At the same time, i see the device on itunes


Hi there,
Something has corrupted so you need to reinstall iTunes, restore the ipod then resync it.
Download the very latest version of iTunes from the Apple site. This will update all the drivers on your PC, so install that.
Once installed, before connecting you ipod, press and hold the Select and Menu buttons on the ipod until the apple logo appears, then press and hold the Select and Play/pause buttons until it displays 'ok to disconnect'. Now connect it to the pc - this puts it in disk mode. When it appears on itunes click the 'Restore' button on it's main page.
That should, once it's updated, restarted (let it do this itself) and resynced, have you up and running again.

I would go ahead and do a system restore - this is a separate method from the resetting all settings. The restore will delete all songs and hoepfully replace any key system files that may have been lost, just in case too many were loaded onto player initially.

There are also the 5 R's listed in the manual.

Try to do a full restore in disk mode.
1. Put your iPod into disk mode - Press top and center buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple symbol come up. As soon as you see the Apple symbol press the center and bottom (play) buttons simulataneously until you see a check mark. After this try to restore in iTunes. We recommend manually managing music versus syncing. But that is a personal choice. If you sync then going to another computer will wipe your music.
2. If 1 doesn't work try removing all USB devices from your computer and reboot. Then restore again either normally or disk mode.

You'll need to reset and then resync the device. To do a reset you turn the lock on and then off and hold down the center select and menu buttons, at the same time, for five seconds until you see the Apple logo appear. Then, plug the unit into your computer and sync. In iTunes you'll want to choose to restore the unit. That will erase and then restore your syncronized data, as well as update the firmware.
