Question about Cambridge Audio Azur 540A Amplifier

My azur 540a/640a v2.0 amplifier is not working.

After turning the amp on a loud buzzing sound came out of the left speaker. then the cap 5 protection system kicked in flasing 3 times. i have tried another speaker which had the same result so i tried isolating the problem and unplugged everything to a point which i only have the amp plugged in with no speakers or cd player and the amp appears to have a low hum then the cap5 security system repeats the same cut off then 3 flashes. i have read the manual which offered very little advice.

I agree with hallsteve.
One or both of the output sections is blown.
What part of the country do you live?
I may be able to suggest someone.

Protection circuits respond to overloads. Unless the protection circuit is faulty there is probably something wrong with the power amp parts located on the heat sink.
It would be a good idea to have the top cover off (on power) and listen for that noise to try and pin it down what is making it.

You are overloading your amp. IMO 640A cannot handle heavy loads.

Better change the speaker combo and connect something that puts right load on the 640A. Else, get a meaty amp from CA.

Volume goes to zero and protection light comes on, any idea what the problem is?

Check the speaker wires for a short. Try operating the amp without the speaker wires hooked up.

I have a Cambridge Azur 640A amp, every time I turn the volume up to over 12 oclock the amp shuts down. Can this be changed? I presume this is a safety mode on the amp. Can you help?

Yes, you are right. That's a protection feature to prevent burnouts. Typically it appears when your speakers are sucking up a lot of load from the amp. Please check your speaker impedance and the amps' output impedance and ensure the wiring are properly done. Some amps are soo sensitive that they may cut-off after certain level due to overload.

Most 640As suffer from this sensitive issue. It is not a fault, but a protection mechanism that is too sensitive. In some cases, it could be due to the open ground earth issue or Left & Neutral reversed at the wall plug. Check your wall plug's connection and if they are perfect, then it could be because of a electrical issue inside the amp. In that case, get the technical support from CA to fix this.

Cambridge azur amp 640a working brill till yesterday !! now protection light !!!! turned it off numerous time etc plenty of venterlation carnt get it to work

Looks like the fuse blown.. or the classic symptom of electrical fault inside the amp. 640A uses a sensitive protection circuit often ends up in this irritating situation. Normally, there is nothing much you can do, but just check your wall plug connection for Open Ground or Left & Neutral reversed issues. If the wall plug is free of error, then you should better contact CA technical support.

The fault is on the amp! It sounds like the protection circuit is detecting a surge on the channel and shuts it down to protect the speaker. I would check the semiconductor device(s) for the right channel on the heatsink of the amp. You might even see damage of burning on one!

Left output ports for both left and right channels do not work

Hi, first thing to do is to check the power supply look for a larger capacitor & using voltmeter measure both sides from ground to positive & ground to negative. Next check the speaker protection circuit if active. If not active measure the voltage from ground to the speaker output before the relay of speaker protection device. The voltage should be zero or close to zero volt. If more then the power transistor or power IC is toasted.

Problem with azur 640a amp

protection mode activated to protect your amp from a problem.
please disconnect all your speaker from the amp and check if it is fine start to connect your speaker one by one until you find the bad one which make the problem-change its cable first and then speaker itself.if the problem still you will have a problem in amp.
